in Human - Bruce riding...

Thomson's name was placed in nomina-
tion by Ken Campbell, who reminded the
crowd that is candidate had won the
nomination last fall but had to resign 'when
William Davis stepped down as' premier
before calling an election.
He said Thomson has lived in W Ingham
for six years, moving here from Owen
Sound where he had run the family hard-
ware business and served as an alderman.
Through his work at CKNX radio and
television, Thomson is well known in the
riding and acquainted with local concerns,
he 'added.
The nomination was seconded by Frank
Biener, who contented himself with saying,
"I was here the first time with Bill and I'm
back again."
Thomson then told the crowd it has the
opportunity to make the Huron -Bruce
riding "a somebody" by% electing a Tory
member. He explained why he had to
decline the previous nomination to return
to work on air at the radio, saying he has
"no regrets".
He said the riding needs a man who is a
"good listener, good negotiator, good
fighters" and promised to give the job
"everything I've got", He went on to
report he has met with the new premier,
'Frank Miller, to discuss local issues "and
he knows where Pm . coming from".
He told the crowd this is a very exciting
riding, but needs a member inside . the
government caucus.
"Your decision must be for the man who
can win the riding."
Following the voting • while the ballots
were being counted, the crowd heard from
veteran MPP and cabinet member Claude
Bennet, currently. Minister of Tourism and
Recreation, who had flown in from his
Ottawa riding earlier in the day to.tour the
Bruce area.
r After congratulating the riding associa-
tion on the turnout for the meeting and
talking about the great potential for
tourism in Ontario, Bennett gave, the
assembled Tories a pep talk and 'launched
into some hard core electioneering.
' "I think it's time Huron -Bruce finds its
way to "the government side," he said,
saying it is not true that an . opposition
member Can accomplish just as much for a
riding as a'member on the governing side
who can sit with ministers in caucus and in
their offices to discuss local concerns.
He also told the crowd "in a veiy
confidential way" that 'the PC party has
targeted ,this riding as one in which it feels
it has a better than average opportunity of
winning.
Bennett drew a chuckle and applause
when he talked about a visit by former .U.S.
Democratic 'Iviee presidential candidate
GeraldineFerraro to London. He claimed
she had been brought in by the liberals
and said it was most appropriate that the
Liberals should bring in as guest speaker
the representative of a party which had just
gone down to its greatest defeat in history.

'program inthe Grey -Bruce area in 1985 as
well as new parenting programs and
courses in the county.
Under the new Child and Family Service
Act instituted by the provincial govern-
ment last year, all county children's aid
societies must be reviewed on a periodic
basis by the Ministry of Community and
Social services. The Bruce County Society
is scheduled for review this year.
Under the new act, Brown said, "There
can be no question the ministry's view will
predominate. Under the act, they have the
power to ' intervene' in all aspects of a
society's operations including finance,
department policies, adininistration and
clinical care offered by a . children's aid
society.
Brown said the Bruce Children's Aid
Society has always had an "excellent
relationship'with the ministry of Commun-
ity and Social Services.
