Suggest Wawanosh residents segregate garbage
By Sharon Dietz
A West W awanosh township resident
has suggested township council send
notices to township households advising
residents to separate their garbage to make
it possible to enforce regulations at the
township dump site. •
Fran McQuail outlined • her ,concerns
about the management of the township
dump site ina letter to council and
presented her suggestions to council at
their March meeting. McQuail said council
should define the different kinds of
garbage :including what the term house-
hold garbage means. Is it compostible gar-
bage or is it old clothes and mattresses?
she asked.
McQuail went on to say it is easier for
township 'residents to segregate their
garbage at home before going to the dump,
because you are dealing with the problem
at the source, Once at the dump, .the
residents should be directed where to put
the different types of garbage. ,
She suggested notices be sent to
residents defining the types of garbage and
how it is to be sorted. If every household..
receives a notice there will be no excuse for
people not to be aware of the regulations
and. the rules can be enforced at the dump
site gate with people being turned away if
they do not comply.
Reeve Jim Aitchison said the dump site
is easier to control in the winter months
and council has considered suggestions for
fencing off the areas of the dump with wire
and putting up signs to indicate where
different .types of garbage should go.
Aitchison said there is definitely room
for improvement and council must take
some 'action because the Ministry of the
Environment has informed council action
must be taken. The township clerk treas-
urer Joan Armstrong noted the trench is
filling up too quickly because the garbage
