leaders hosted a Workshop for Tri -County
CGIT leaders and a few senior girls.
Groups from Paisley, W ingham, Atwood,
Dungannon and' Lucknow were represent-
ed.

beginning with worship in the Catacombs.
Leaders were able to browse in the large
display of worship resources. The senior
girls with help from Madeleine Daly
planned Vespers for the opening of the
Jamboree weekend.
Craft ideas' were on display and many
resources were for sale. A sing song
started the afternoon session. In small
groups leaders and girls shared about their
CGIT meetings, 'studies and projects.
A funny. skit, What Not to Take to
Jamboree, led to planning for the June

in 1942 and. Carmen in 1943. Sam returned
in November; 1945 and Herb in January,
1946 with Carmen returning in July, 1946.
When the men came home, the family
returned to Luclmow where Herb and
Myrtle opened a fruit market which they
operated -for three months and purchased a
home on Clyde Street. -Later they gave up
the fruit. store and Herb' acquired property
acrossthe street from 'their home which
had a barn for a couple of horses and cattle.
Carmen purchased a farm on the second
concession of Kinloss and later Herb and
Myrtle moved to the home on • Carmen's
farrn. In 1948 Herb and Myrtle purchased
the former McKay farm on the second
concession of Kinloss now owned by
Donald. Maclntyre. Herb did mixed farm-
ing for a few years; later convecting the
barn for broiler chickens which they raised
in the summer months.
Herb and Myrtle spent Winters in
Lakeland, Florida where they had a mobile
home in W oodall's Trailer • Park. . They
spent 23years at Lakeland, selling their
mobile home in 1984. They have spent the

. say they -have enjoyed very much.
Improved method tests sow back fat

heat cycle.
The first heat cycle in gilts usually occurs.
at 180 pounds. In the initial cycle, says
Ms. Peer, the gilt should not be bred
because the piglets in the litter will be too
small. When the sows and gilts are in their
cycle, they should be tested every two, days
by pressing on their'backs s ey will
stand for breeding.
If the sow will -stand, it sho d be bred 12
hours after the test and again 12 hours
later. The same or different boars can be
used. •
Feeding the sow and gilt requires
increased management because they re-
quire different levels of food at various
stages of their reproductive cycle, says
Peer. The peak period when a sow requires
more food is after. weaning. The sow needs
this. extra .feed in order to come into heat
seven days after weaning. A lower energy
intake' will mean it will take longer.
A few . days after the sow has been
re -bred, the feed ration should be cut down
to normal levels as over feeding willcause
embryo mortality. The ideal volume of feed
depends on 'factors such asam temper-
ature, the size of thea sow and the energy
content in the diet.
Overfeeding the sow through the early
stages of pregnancy also causes problems
such as mastitis and still births. The crucial
time for extra feeding during pregnancy,
says Peer, is the last two weeks of preg-
nancy. Since 50 per cent of the piglet's
weight is gained in the last two weeks, it is
important for the sow to receive more feed.

"A lot of organizations want to cut this
group to shreds and they will have all the
transcripts of the last hearing and five.
months to study them."
Stephen .Thompson of Clinton is the
acting treasurer for the group and he got a
chuckle from the crowd by telling the
farmers he has invested the contributions
in a credit union and "it could be the only
profit making. operation we have in 1985."
He also advised them to keep their receipts.
and claim the donation as a farm expense.
While . the primary , purpose of the
organization is to try to keep more hydro
corridors out of the Huron -Perth area, in
conversation following the meeting Mc-
Quail
o-Quailagreed with a suggestion by Chris
Palmer, president of the Township Federa-
tion of Agriculture, that it could also be an
effective tool for n'agotiating the best
possible deal with Ontario Hydro on behalf
of farmers if it should turn out that a power
line does run through this area.
