Win Legion speaking contest
Fourteen students from four area
elementary schools competed in . the
public speaking competition sponsored
by the Royal 'Canadian Legion Branch
309, Lucknow held at the Lucknow Legion
Hall Friday evening, February 15.
In the senior division Kent Campbell, a
grade 8 student at Lucknow Central
Public Sehool, placed fust with his
speech, Girls. . Heather Steer, grade 5,
Lucknow Central, placed second With a
speech' entitled Hiccups and Ken .Strong,
a grade 8 pupil at Brookside Public
School, placed third with a speech about
Chief Joseph. •
In the junior division Joel Wright of
Brookside Public School came first with a
speech about his Trip to Cairo.. Luke
Cranston, grade 6, Lucknow Central
placed second speaking about the Ups
and Downs of Doing a Video and Tara
Thacker, grade 4, Kinloss Central Public
School placedlhird with a speech on My
Sister.
Also competing in the senior division
were Christine Connelly, grade 8, Kings-
bridge Community School, Braces; Wen-
dy Miltenburg; grade 8, Kingsbridge,
Being.Thirteen and Laurie Hayden, grade
8, Brookside, Soap Operas.
In the ,junior division Jodi Webster,
grade 4, Brookside, Gee! It's Tough to be
a Kid; Angela Boyd, grade 4, Inclmow,
Books; • April Brindley, grade 5, Kinloss,
My Raccoon', Roger Miltenburg, grade 6,
Kingsbridge, Our Farm and Patricia
Stapleton; grade 6, Kingsbridge, Teen-
agers, also competed.

County sets 4 per cent increase for non-union staff
Salary increases of four per cent were ap-
proved for Huron County's non-union staff in
various departments.
The salary increases were approved at
county council's February meeting.
However, all salary increases are subject to
review if any unionized employee group
receives more than a four per cent increase.
The 1985 salary of department heads is as
follows: clerk -treasurer and administrator
$51,974; deputy clerk -treasurer, $44,460;
county engineer, $48,074; medical officer of
health, $62,816; chief librarian, $34,866;
planning director, $45,188; social services
administrator, $32,578; Huronview ad-
ministrator, $37,544; and museum curator,
$26,728.
Non-union secretarial staff salaries range
from $13,234 to $21,944. )
Planning department staff salaries
ranges as follows: planners, $26,832 to.
$35,828; junior planner, $20,852 to $26,520;
planning technician, ranges from $19,916 to
$25,480 and a contract planner earns $18,902.
The chief custodian's salary ranges from
$22,854 to $25,246 while the custodians'
salaries range from $16,718 to $19,006. A
casual part-time custodian receives .$6.50
per hour.
The social service field workers salaries
range from $18,850 to $23,400. A senior social
worker receives an additional $650 a year.
Library staff salaries are as follows: the
children's and assistant librarian receives
$12.06 an hour, the van driver receives $7.02
per hour and the caretaker receives $511 a
month; branch supervisors' per hour rate
ranges from $6.09 to $8.17 while other
branch staff per hour rate ranges from $5,84
to $6.83.
A library technician's salary ranges from
$15,522 to $18,694.
The health unit's health supervisory staff
salary schedules are as follows: director of
public health inspections ranges from
$27,170 to $33,878; director of public health
nursing ranges from $27,170 to $33,878; the
director of home care salary ranges from
$27,274 to $33,202.
The, health educator's salary schedule
ranges from $24,518 to $29,432; the nutri-
tionist's salary ranges , from $23,556 to
$28,470.
Under) home care a physiotherapist
receives $29,432 and an occupational
therapist receives $16.63 per hour; asocial
worker with a BSW salary schedule ranges
from $23,478 to $28,158 and a social worker
with an MSW has a salary schedule range of
$24,518 to $29,432.
Huronvie:w's supervisory staff salary
schedules are as follows: assistant ad-
ministrator, $26,312 to $30,290; chief
engineer, $22,750 to $25,844; housekeeping,
laundry, social services supervisor,/ $21,476
to $24,700; food supervisor, $22,750 to
$25,844; stockkeeper, $19,188 to $22,412.
Nursing director, $27,846 to $32,344; assis-
tant director of nursing, $26,156 to $30,706;
and registered nurses, $24,466 to $29,042.
