Katimavik, Karl has four days off every three .months and in Midland he worked from Wednes- day to Sunday at the ski resort and spent Mondays working as a 'volunteer .in the community. Each person is responsible for finding a -volunteer job in the cornmunity and Karl worked at a friend- ship centre handing out second hand clothing . to the needy. The difference between the military option and the civilian option meant the group needed time, to adjust from being told what to do, when and how in the • military. situation, to having the choice of getting out of a work experience what you put • into it.. . • • Karl says his stint in ,the military has shown him the military life is not for him and he wants a career as a policeman. He has learned a lot 'about himself while travelling with Katimavik. He knows his strengths and weaknesses. He has learned to adjust 'to living with a group of individuals in the group home situation where everybody, has their own eccentricities and idyosyncrasies. The Katimavik program is \excellent for any young person who does not know what he 'wants to do or where he's going in life, says Karl. It's an excellent opportunity for someone who wants a year off from school because they are undecided. Working as a volunteer for a $1 a days puts a whole new persepctive on things. The work experience has been very valuable to Karl because of the skills he is learning as he travels aroundour country meeting Canadians !from various back- grounds. Working as a Katimavik vol- unteer is an experience he will always remember.
