The morning after he had rescued
MacRorie from the Shamrock Hotel, Neil
MacCrimmon made, his way to the drunk-'
ard's barn and found him mucking out the
stables. When MacRorie saw the burly
figure of MacCrimmon standing in the
doorway, he stuck his fork into a steaming
pile of manure and came to greet him.
"Good morning tae ye, Mister"MacCrim-
mon. I was just going tae finish my chares
and then come over tae see ye. I need taw
thank ye frae bringing me hame last
night."
There was a stern look on MacCrim-
mon's face.
"I'll no be needin' thanks frae doing my
duty tae a neighbour," he said tersely. "1
hae a score tae settle wi' ye."
MacRorie was puzzled and he shook his.
head.
"I dinna ken what ye mean, Mr. Mac-
Wrimmon, but if I did something last night
hich I canna remember, I am very sorry."
MacCrimmon clenched his fists and his
face became flushed with anger.
"It's no what ye did last night. A man is
entitled tae hae a drink so long as he is not
taken' food from the mouths of his family.
Och, it's no that. Ye're a coward MacRorie
- ye beat a poor wee defenceless woman,
and I'll no allow any man tae get awa' w'
that."
MacRorie's face suddenly became white.
He realized MacCrimmon was about to
thrash him., and he was filled with fear and
embarrassment.
"If ye're taikin' .about me hitting 'my
wife, how do ye know she dinna deserve' it?
And what right have ye tae interfere
between a man and his woman?"
"I hae nay right, unless it becomes
violent. Then I think I hae a duty tae gi' a
bully what he deserves. I am an old
fashioned man, MacRorie. I believe in an
"eye frae ap eye". In your case mind ye,
It'll be two 41ack eyes - double the punish-
ment ye gae tae ye're wee wife."
MacCrimmonyoung his arms twice and
struck MacRorlh in the face.
"If y're a man; ye'll fight back," he said,
as his victim reeled away, covering his face
with his filthy hands. "Vm waitin' frae ye,
and, if ye have no the courage to strike
back, perhaps ye'l1 ken what ye're wife felt
when ye struck her!"
MacCrimmon's punishment of MacRorie
did not remain concealed' for long, and
when it had sifted through the ' entire

community, there were many who did not
approve of their leader's harsh "sent-
ence". Certain women however, who
having suffered in silence for many years,
were secretly elated that MacCrimmon
stood ready to defend them:
At the next council meeting, some
members expressed (very diplomatically)
their disapproval of MacCrimmon's hand-
ling of the MacRorie affair. But Mac-
'Crimmon was not upset by their insinua-
tions.
"I'm glad everybody in Redtrees knows I
thrashed MacRorie," he told them. "What
is mare, I'll be going after every man who
uses physical violence against his wife. I
ken ye're taikin' behind my back about
"MacCrimmon's law", so ye'd best know
what that law is. "If any man shall strike
his wife, I MacCrimmon, shall meter out to
him twice, or maybe three times the
suffering in return."

Board sets terms of employment for teachers
The Huron County Board of Education set
the terms of employment for its secondary
school teachers.
The terms for the over 200 teachers/were
approved at the board's January meeting
and presented to the teachers on January 11.
Although no collective agreement has
been reached, the terms of employment set
down the teachers working conditions until
a collective agreement is negotiated.
"The terms are consistent with items
agreed to in negotiations plus the major
recommendations in the fact-finding report.
These recommendations included a
monetary increase of four per cent on the
salary grid plus increment. This increase is
identical to agreements negotiated with
other teacher groups and all other employee
groups," states a memo from school board
chairman Eugene Frayne. •
The other major change is the provision of
an aawttonal halftime special education
teacher at •Seaforth District I3igh School.
There' have been 4.5 teaching positions for
special education in Huron's high schools,
and now the number will increase to five.
"This commitment is . an increase and
replaces the existing special education com-
plement. The terms of employment have
also clarified existing roles and workable
procedures for the allocation of staff and the
staff improvement plan," states the chair-
man's memo.
Teacher negotiator Shirley Weary of
Goderich said the teachers are going
through the terms of employment document
(40°pages in length) before they make any
decisions on how they'll react.
"We do not negotiate in the press," said
Mrs. Weary. `.Negotiations take place
across the table, not m the media. Maybe
the board wants to work that way but we
don't work that way."
Mrs: Weary said the teachers". were in-
structed by the high school principals to be
at the January 11 meeting. At . least one
Bruce county council commissions
study on future of agriculture
Bruce County farmers will have a chance
to present their views on the future of
agriculture in an unique new study
commissioned by Bruce County council.
County council received a report at their
regular meeting Tuesday outlining the
terms of the $45,000 study. The study is
aimed at helping the county define the role
of agriculture in the Bruce.
Roy Pennington of Culross Township is
the chairman of the committee.
"When the study is completed, we will
have something to present to governments
and lending institutions that shows the
future of agriculture," he said.
A consulting firm, Deloitte, Haskins and
Sells and Associates have been hired to
carry out the study.
The county intends to hold nine group
discussions with farmers and their spouses
at several locations in the county.
Pennington said the county is looking for
a cross section from the farming.commun-
ity, including all age groups. Plans call for.
eight to 10 farmers to attend each meeting.
In order to collect the names of farmers,
township councils will be asked to submit a
list of up to 40 names. Towns and villages
will be asked to submit the names of
businessmen, such as feed and equipment
dealers, who work in the agriculture sector.

representative from each school as well as
some trustees were in attendance at the
meeting.
Besides the memo and a copy of the terms
of employment document, the teachers also
received . a cheque "which reflects the in-
crease in salary from September to
December minus the required deductioris
The teachers' negotiator said as far as she
knows the teachers are cashing the cheques
and no collective action is being taken m
regards to the terms of employment.
'This has antagonized the teachers un-
necessarily," said Mrs. Weary, however she
was optimistic that eventually a collective
agreement will be signed..
This isn't the first time the board has set
down the terms of employment for its secon-
dary school teachers. Three years ago, in
January of 1982 the board set down the
terms of employment for the 1981-82 school
year. Later that year, a two-year collective
agreement was signed effective September
The 1983-84 collective agreement fell
under the provincial control year and
teachers automatically had a five per cent
increase.
The terms oil employment come after the
fact finder's Bort has been public for 60
days. The secondary school teachers and
the board have also had mediation.
The total secondary school teachers com-
pensation package in the terms of employ-
ment will cost $10.5 million including
salaries and benefits.
On the salary grid, the lowest salary is
$19,860 and the highest salary is $44,120. The
average teacher's salary is $41,300.
Responsibility allowances range from
$1,550 to $4,44Q,and extra degree allowances
range from $550 for a BA to $1,100 for a doc-
toral degree.
Vice -principals' salaries range from
$48,000 to $52,000 and principals' salaries
rang' from $55,000 to $59,000.
