It looked as if the first quarrel of the
marriage. was about to ensue, and Teddy
had no wish to take part in it. With mixed
feelings of remorse, embarrassment and
surprise 'at Lucy's firm and adamant
defense of her rights; Teddy left the table
and hurried out of the house.
Lucy was instantly' sorry for what she
had said,, but only because it had placed a
strain upon her relationship with her young
husband. When she had cleared the table
and washed the dishes, she put on her
bonnet and made her way to the house of
Chippy Chisholm. She found Chippy in his
smallworkshop; planing a length of board.
When he looked up and 'saw her standing
in the doorway, he smiled and took his old
clay pipe out of . his mouth.' --
"Well, `Well, good -day tae ye, Lucy. Ye look as
pretty as a:picture. What brings ye over tae
see old Chippy?''
Lucy bit her lip. She was at a loss for the
right way to open her conversation.
`Do you no longerwish to work for me,
Mr. Chisholm? I was told you did not go'to
the mill this morning." '
Chippy . walked over toper and laid his
hand gently on her arm; in a way which a
father might approach his daughter.
"Don't let that upset ye lass. 1 only
worked there tae getye started in
business. Ye have a better man than me
there now, and .I am very pleased ye
have."
"But I did, not know Mr. Simpson would
cause you to leave. The while situation is
very distressing to me."
Chippy walked out, into the sunlight and
began to charge his, pipe. "There is only

one captain on a ship, and only room frae
one boss in yon mill. I heard tell he is a .
better man than me and I am no sae stupid
• as tae challenge him."
"I feel I have wronged you Mr.
Chisholm. It was 1 who agreed to employ
Mr. Simpson, without so much as speaking
to you first."
"No need tae apologize; Lucy. Ye did
what ye thought was best - what anybody
else might hae done. But let me tell ye, ye
have the best o' two worlds. If yon Adam
Simpson does not come up tae expecta-
• tions, ye have no need tae worry. Old
Chippy will never let ye down!"
