The Lucknow Sentinel, 1985-01-02, Page 7TO "THE EDITOR Td the Editor: t In July of this year my family and I had the pleasure of attending the Alton reunion." Coming from western Canada we take great pride in our "Western Hospitality". However our cousins and the people of the Lucknow area gave us •a welcome that would be impossible to surpass. If -1 may I would like to thank all those involved, those we visited, the organizing group, the ones who took part• in a beautiful dedication service; the bus driver who took us on the tour,- Marian Zinn and The Sentinel for the great photosand story coverage. We shall carry forever"' oreve fond memories of our visit and the Alton Reunion. May I wish all of your the happiest of festive seasons and the best in the New Year. ° p.. Sincerely, Dick Pye.. REDTREES by Don Campbell *from page 6 Chippy - he'll understand it's frae the best." - Lucy's face suddenly became sad. But she had no intention of becoming involved in an argument. She shrugged her shoulders in resignation. "Very well, dear," she whispered. "As you wish." Teddy ran down the patch and caught up. with Adam Simpson on theconcession road. Lucy saw them talking together, and went into the house with a heavy heart. Promises " made on the spur of the .moment are sometimes very hard to keep, and Teddy had to summon all his courage to face Chippy Chisholm. He explained in glowing term's that Adam Simpson was just what the mill Vittded and how "fortunate they were that he happed to come their• way. "My wife thinks it would be best if he took over the running of the mill," he lied. "No offence tae you Mr. Chisholm - and ye may still work wi' us if ye want." Old Chippy smiled in an odd kind of way. There was even a"humourous twinkle in his eye. "Did ye 'stop tae wonder what such an experienced man is doing looking frae work?" he asked. "If he's sae wonderful, why did he leave the 'Ottawa Valley?" In the next few ..paragraphs. I am going to, try and explain what.I think is the. real meaning of a war memorial. I think //i 'cenotaph or war memorial is there top'ay tribute to those. Who fought or. served in the war. It helps us to remember. the suffering the men and their families went through. How the young children were separated from their father and a wife. wondered if her husband would ever return from war. alive. . A . cenotaph also reminds us of our freedom. We are so very fortunate to live in a country of freedom and liberty. Those people were so willing to give their lives for the generations after them to live freely. A war :memorial reminds us to be thank- ful. We are so lucky not to have to be separted from our family "and friends. We really are not nearly as thankful as we should be. y We should- show our gratitude every day of .the year instead of just on Remembrence Day. It is very hard for my generation to grasp tht real • significance of a war memorial because we never lived in the times of war. But, just because of this we should still be very grateful for those who died for us. Try your best to think about the importance of war memorials., not just on Remembrance Day, but every day of the • year. The Significance of Havinga War Memorial Service By Heather Priestap • Why do we stand by the cenotaph on Rem- embrance Day? ' Why do we stand in unison and silently pray? Why don't we laugh and talk to our friends? ' Why don't we sit till the long service ends? Why do we bother going on this cold, dark- ening day? Why do we listento what the men have to says Why do we listen to the last post with care? Why do we stand without a stare? Why is the lady beside me crying? Is she .thinkingf all the _people dying? We do all of the things because we care too. ' We care for the soldiers and all they had to do. To make our country peaceful and free. They fought in the war for you and me. After all they have• done we can spare one day in November, To thank the brave soldiers and remember. Remembrance Day By Jeremy Roberts Remembrance day take place at the I lth . hour _on` the 11th ay of the 11th month. Itis a day to remember all the men and women who fought for Canada in our past. It is a day when we should wear poppies, attend ceremonies and pray for the people who fought and died for us. War must have been a scary time for all the men and women who fought.
