FAQ FLAT POI THE RAILWAYS
(Toronto Telegram)
Canada's railways are a national as-
set. Their bankruptcy and destruc-
tion through unfair bus and truck com-
petition would be a national calamity
The present competition from which
they suffer is unfair. The railways
were obliged to purchase private right-
of-way and this they must maintain
at their own expenae. They are bur-
dened with heavy costs for grade seer
aratlon and other alwular works.
Ruses and trucks operate on Improved
highways hunt at public expense.
Braes and trucks cannot give the na-
tion-wide service that the railways pre -
vide. They cannot perform all the
functions that the railways perform.
But they take the cream of the short -
haul bualnesa and leave the taxpayer,
and stockholders to toot tbe bills for
the losses and deertts thus forced on
the railroads. Legitimate competition
cannot and should not he anpprewaed.
