Resources was recently named “Conservation Officer of the Year" by an international sportsmen's
organization, an honour Mr. Sturgeon's staff feel he richly deserves. Presenting the award at Queen’s
Park was the Hon. Vincent G. Kerrio, centre, Minister of Natural Resources, and Bill Falls, chairman of
the officer of the year program.
Holiday time at The Citizen
This will be the last issue of 1987for The Citizen. In order to give a
holiday to staff members (some of whom haven’t had a holiday
since the paper begin in Oct. 1985) there will be no issue of The
Citizen between Christmas and Yew Year’s. The next issue will be
January 6.
The Brussels office will be officially closed until December 31
although there may be people there from time to time. Anyone
wanting to pay a bill or leave news can deposit it through the mail
slot in the front door.
The Blyth office will be open Dec. 22 and 23 but then will be closed
uutil January 4. There will be people available from time to time but
no regular hours will be kept.
Sturgeon MNR's Man of Year
In a special ceremony at Queen’s
Park on December 14. Conserva
tion Officer Glen Sturgeon of the
Wingham Branch of the Ministry
of Natural Resources was named
"Wildlife Officer of the Year" for
Ontario, by the Shikar-Safari Club
International.
Shikar-Safari is a world-wide
organization of sportsmen dedi
cated to the conservation of
wildlife, the preservation of hunt
ing. the protection of hunters'
rights. The annual award acknow
ledges the work of MNR staff who
give moreofthemselvestotheir
jobs than is required.
Each year, one MNR officer is
chosen from each Canadian pro-
si nee for the award, as are their
counterparts from every state in
rhe United States.
Mr. Sturgeon was recognized
not only for his outstanding efforts
in wildlife management, but also
for his role as a keen and sincere
proponent of conservation and
wildlife education, being actively
involved in speaking to school
children throughout the Wingham
District, as well as in organizing
Project Wild workshops for area
elementary school teachers.
In addition to his regular
enforcement duties. Mr. Sturgeon
is officer-in-charge of both Point
Farms and the Hullett Provincial
Wildlife Area, where he co-ordi
nates educational visitors services
activities, wildlife management
programs, and the hundreds of
hours of habitat improvement work
volunteered each year by school
and community groups.
The awards of a commemorative
plate and a certificate of recogni
tion were presented to Mr. Stur
geon h.y the Hon. Vincent G.
Kerrio, Minister of Natural Re
sources, and by Bill Falls of Webb,
Mississippi, chairman of the offi-
cer-of-the-year program. At the
same time, Mr. Sturgeon’s wife,
Donelda, was presented with a
book entitled “Kudu Stew."
Co-winner of the 1987 Ontario
award was Henry Kujala of the
MNR’s Parry Sound District. Mr.
Kujala died in a helicopter crash on
October 5 while photographing
fish spawning beds. His award was
accepted by his widow.
Mr. Sturgeon was born and
raisedin Bayfield, where his father
was a commercial fisherman. He
worked for the Ministry of Natural
Resources as a maintenance fore
man at the Pinery Provincial Park
near Grand Bend for more than 12
years, before bidding successfully
on the position he now holds with
the Wingham District office,
where he has been for the past five
years.
