Myrtle Vodden elected to head Bly th UCW
Thirty-seven Blyth United
Church Women came to the manse
last Monday, Dec. 14,tohearof
their achievements as outlined in
the convenors’ and leaders’ re
ports and to also enjoy the
Christmas atmosphere.
Not only were the manses’
rooms as attractive as ever with
Christmas decor, but included,
this year, were two large orchid
plants in bloom, the kind that
flourishes 4n the Philippines, the
native land of the Ramirez family.
Lenora Davidson and June Peck
added spiritual meaning, leading
the worship service with a Christ
mas theme. Rena Watt played for
three Christmas hymns. Listening
to June and Lenora's readings, one
was reminded of the lovely sur
prises (call them miracles, if you
wish) that can come at Christmas.
Even in the presentation of the
vear's-end reports. Santa’s spirit,
and it can be a comical one,
prevailed. Wrapped gifts were
given, not to the present Execu
tive. who had done well, but to
leaders facing next year's challen
ges. They were gifts to facilitate
their work and to handle emergen
cies. Forinstance, should the piano
balk. pianistsRuby Philp and Rena
Watt, were handed a ukelele and
banjo; the new president received
a gavel; the treasurer, a bank; the
secretary, a two-foot pencil for
lengthy meetings; Dorothy Daer, a
spool of thread, in case her quilters
will run - out of it. Mary Wightman
and Evelyn Smith can don fashion
able sun goggles when conducting
the Sunshine unit meetings.
And so it went amid hearty
laughter, until every 1988 execu
tive member was looked after.
Rev. Ramirez installed the
1988-89 Executive, using the
meaningful service and prayer
outlined in the U nited Church’s
manual.
A Shakespeare Flower Plate
from the Blyth Pottery was presen

Make a ’kissing ball'
An old-fashioned kissing ball
made from Christmas cards makes
a lovely family room or hallway
conversation piece.
To make a unique card kissing
ball from Christmas cards, cut 12
cards into three-inch circles. Fold
each circle in from four sides to
create a square. Glue each folded
tion to Blyth U.C.W. work, and her
innovative ideas in planning
events. In January, Susan begins
her new duties in two executive
positions in Huron-Perth Presby
tery.
Mary Wightman, Evelyn Smith
and Norma Ramirez had provided
dainty refreshments served at the
meeting’s close, at which time
Mrs. Webster and her assistants
went on their merry way, distribut
ing 18 poinsettias to shut-ins.
The following is the executive for
1988-89: President, Myrtle Vod
den; first Vice, June Peck; second
Vice, Emily Phillips; secretary,
Adeline Campbell; assistant Sec.,
Feme McDowell; corresponding
sec., Lenora Davidson; treasurer,
Edelgard Hoba; summer catering
treas., Mary Holland; nominating
edge to the folded edge of another
circle until you have a three-dimen
sional ball shape.
Attach ribbon with a piece of
holly or mistletoe on one end, up
through the ball and make a loop at
the top for hanging. Sprinkle
glitter along glued edges if desir
ed.
