PAGE 34. THE CITIZEN, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1987. Frorn the Minister^ Study^ Jesus provides for everyone's hopes and fears BY REV. VIC JAMIESON BELGRAVE AND BRUSSELS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHES “0 Little Town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” These words were written by the carol writer, Phillips Brooksinthe 1800’sbutwhatdo they really mean to us in 1987? Is Jesus just a person of past history, oris he a part of our present lives as well as our future? In the Old Testament we see in theGardenofEden that natural man was deceived by Satan, diguised as a serpent, to think that he or she can know what is good a nd what is evil apart from what God says. From that time until Jesus’ return is a long dark spiritual night for everybody unless they put their complete trust in Jesus Christ as God’s only true revelation of himself. Proverbs 3: 5-6 advises us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.” God through his Holy Spirit is telling us, in the words of Phillips Brooks, toallow Jesus to be born in our hearts. He will enable us to cast out our sins, anything that pre vents us from acknowledging our completedependenceonGod in Jesus for all of life’s provisions here and hereafter. This perfect love is received and shared with others by those who will enable us to get rid of all our fears about Guild gives flowers to sick In spite of inclement weather 15 members and two guests gathered for the meeting of Melville Guild on Dec. 15 at the home of Mrs. Mary Huether. Christmas decorations added a festive touch to the evening. An opening verse The Greatest Gift was read by Mary followed by the singing of carols and prayer. Mrs. Jeanne Ireland chose as her scripture, portions from Matthew and Luke telling of Jesus’ birth. A story called “Rachel’s Little Star Tree” was read by Mrs. Rose Marie Bishop after which Angie Yoon played carols on the piano. Sheri Huether read ‘ ‘The Magic of Christmas” andalsoactedas Mary anything in our past, present and future lives. In 2 Peter 1:19 we read: “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do welltopayattentiontoit, astoa light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” We now live in New Testatment times, the time between Jesus’ in a Christmas tableau which nicely illustrated an unusual view of the Saviour’s birth as seen thicnoh the eyes of “The Innkeeper’s Wile” read by Rose Marie. Business followed, conducted by Mrs. Jean Bewley. It was decided that for each month two different ladies will be responsible for any catering that might arise. The treasurer reported 17 poin- settias having been delivered to sick and shut-ins and a gift of $20 will be given to the nursing home. Several thank you cards were read. A gift exchange and refresh ments served by Mary Huether, Rose Marie Bishop and Kathleen Semple closed a very enjoyable evening. first and second coming. God through Jesus’ death by his body and blood and through his resur rection has released his Holy Spirit so that everyone can conceive Jesus in his or her heart. Through faith in Jesus we have access to God’s unmerited favour (grace) and kindness beyond which can be expected (mercy) which are his provisions for lasting peace to Overcome all our fears and fulfill all our hopes.
