For the second time in six months the Blyth and District Community Centre is without an arena manager. The resignation of Robert Stuart as arena manager was announced at the Dec. 15 meeting of Blyth village council by Councillor Lloyd Sippel in making his report on the arena board. The resignation had been handed in that day. Arrangements had been made, he said, for other staff members to take over the job for the time being with extra help to be hired as needed. No firm plans have been made on a replacement but Councillor Sippel said the indica tion from one other township, Hullett, was that the job should be retendered. Councillor Bill Howson said there was no urgency in finding a replacement and indicated some thought had to be given to the long-term needs of the facility. He indicated there are problems trying to get a manager who averages hours out over the whole year with heavy use of the facility (andlonger hours) in the winter and lighter use in the summer. The results of the user-survey of arena facilities have been sent to the municipalities supporting the arena. The survey means some adjustment in the rates the munici palities will pay (if the arena agreement is accepted by all municipalities). Blyth will actually go down one per cent to 31; Hullett down one per cent to 24; East Wawanosh will be 20, up from 17; West Wawanosh will be down two per cent to seven; Morris will be up one at 18 per cent. The surprise in the survey, Councillor Sippel said, was the amount of use of the facilities from those not living in any of the supporting municipalities. This is particularly so in broomball, he said where fully 33 per cent of users were not from the local area. This brought up the possibility of user-fees but the broomball league was worried that user fees would scare some members off which would reduce the number of teams and hurt ♦’he arena because there would be less ice rental. The league did seem amenable, the councillor said, to giving more financial support to the arena to help offset the deficit in arena operations. It was pointed out the new survey shows that local municipali ties will be paying about $54 per user per year to support the arena. The final version of the proposed arena agreement has been sent to all area municipalities, Councillor Sippel reported. Phone John Nixon 887-9417 agent for WEST WAWANOSH MUTUAL INS. CO.
