The Huron County Health Unit
will be receiving $8,800 from the
Ontario Ministry of Health to
finance an AIDS information pro
gram in the county.
The Ontario Ministry of Health
has announced it will be spending
$7.1 million dollars for AIDS
programs across the province. This
money will be available for AIDS
education, information, and sup
port for community groups and
health units.
“Many people still lack a basic
understanding of AIDS, or refuse
to accept its realities,” said Health
Minister Elinor Caplan in making
the announcement.
“It is therefore necessary to
expand our groundwork of infor
mation, education and compas
sionate care. Until an effective
vaccine is developed, this informa
tion will be of even greater
importance in fighting AIDS.”
Of the $7.1 million dollars,
$8,800 has been given to Huron
County for a one-time grant. This
may seem like a small percentage
for the funding of the county’s
AIDS program, but on the other
hand there is only one known AIDS
victim existing in Huron County.

already decided how mostof the
grant is going to be spent, and they
have just to work out the finer
details. The $8,800 will be used to
purchase video equipment, VCRs
and for some of the many good
informational videos on AIDS
whichareavailable. The money
will further be used to pay any
special speakers whom the Health
Unit hires, toset up workshops,
and to provide information which
will be made available to the public
through the public library system.
This information wiil come from a
variety of different sources and will
be kept updated.
The videos will make up a large
part of the informational material
available. Mr. Bokhout says there
are lots of videos being produced,
and video is the medium people
prefer. The videos will be shown in
the schools, at public forums, at
PT A meetings and in a variety of
other settings.
Mr. Bokhout says the Health
Unit has already been involved
i Christmas
and
with AIDS education, and has been
involved with Huron County
schools. They have also met with
teachers to discuss the subject and
howitshouldbedealtwith. The
Health Unit and the Community
Psychiatric Services in Clinton will
be organizing a workshop to
discuss the subject of AIDS in May.
“We’ve already begun,” says
Mr. Bokhout, “we haven’t waited
for this money, but now that it’s
here it’ll make things easier.”
