Teeswater girl, Listowel boy among Ontario's Junior Citizens of the year Ontario’s Junior Citizens for 1988, including an 18-year-old girl from Teeswater and a 14-year-old boy from Listowel, have been selected in an event organized by the Ontario Community News­ papers Association (OCNA). OCNA president Jean Morrison announced the 12 award recipients December 4, after they were chosen from among 56 nomina­ tions submitted by member news­ papers. The recipients are: Lisa Kuen- zig, 18, of Teeswater; Joshua Davis, 10, of Burlington; Randy Thibeault, 16, of Napanee; Susan Mitchell, 16, of Bracebridge; Janice Johnston, 17, of Oakville; Geoff Carnegie, 14, of Listowel; Ryan Giddy, 12, of Fergus; Jena Bellisle, 14, and Yvette Pritchard, 14, of Combermere; Jeff Phaneuf, 16, of Tilbury; and the Merry Mates, a group award recipient from Mount Forest. The Oakville-based OCNA, which represents over 250 com­ munity newspapers in Ontario, Quebec and the Northwest Terri­ tories, has honored Ontario’s McKillop councillor resigns McKillop township council is seeking a replacement for a township councillor after John George resigned at the Dec. 15 meeting of council. Mr. George sent a letter of resignation to the council saying “a series of positive and negative events have evolved to create my consistent absence. I therefore have no other choice but to resign my position. ’ ’ He went on to say he had enjoyed, for the most part, his five years serving on council. Mr. George had not attended a council meeting since October 1. Any qualified elector from the township can apply for the open position. Applications are being accepted until Dec. 31. The council will be meeting on January 5 at 12:30 to choose a new councillor. Junior citizens with an awards program since 1981 with co-spon­ sor Canadian Airlines Internation­ al. Youngsters from ages six to 18 are recognized for their courage, ingenuity, resourcefulness, initia­ tive, leadership, fortitude and community service. The award recipients and their families will be the guests of Canadian Airlines and the ONCA at an awards ceremony at the Toronto Hilton Hotel on Friday, March 4. They will be received by Ontario Lieutenant-Governor Lin­ coln Alexander and each presented a $200 cheque, a comemorative plaque, a gold lapel pin and a family portrait with the Lieuten­ ant-Governor. Mrs. Morrison praised both the awards recipients and the other nominees. “They can all be proud of their accomplishments,’’ she said. “They proved they’re willing to go the extra mile, if for no other reason than for their own personal growth and pride, and it’s a lesson that shouldn’t be lost on the rest of us.’’ Ontario’s 1988 Junior Citizens include: •LisaKuenzig, 18 of Teeswater, for her efforts in overcoming a physical handicap to become ac­ tively involved in Brownies, Guides and the Junior Farmers; •Joshua Davis, 10 of Burlington, for the quick thinking shown in saving the life of a friend who had fallen down an abandoned well; •Randy Thibeault, 16,ofFoleyet who, despite suffering serious burns from a propane stove explosion, walked seven kilome­ ters to seek help for his more seriously injured father: •Brad Haffle, nine, of Napanee, a cancer patient who was the 1987 Ontario representative in the Terry Fox Run; •Susan Mitchell, 16, of Brace­ bridge, for her efforts in educating others in her community about brain cancer, from which she suffered; •Janice Johnston, 17, ofOak- ville, for initiating a memorial fund to plant 256 maple trees in honor of the U.S. servicemen killed in a Newfoundland air crash; •GeoffCarnegie, 14, of Listo­ wel, for community activities that encompassed projects ranging from taping church services for shut-ins to organizing a bake sale to raise money for a tornado disaster relief fund; •Ryan Giddy, 12, of Fergus, for his courage and perseverence in maintaining an active lifestyle despite an on-going battle with cancer; •Jena Bellisle, 14, and Yvette Pritchard, 14, both of Comber- mere, for the teamwork and presence of mind shown when assisting a friend who suffered a severe neck injury in a driving accident. •Jeff Phaneuf, 16, of Tilbury, who was instrumental in organiz­ ing, operating and coaching a new soccer league in his community, exhibiting both leadership quali­ ties and maturity; •The Merry Mates (Marie Black, Taunia MacMillan, Ste­ phanie Mills, Brenda Morris, all 11, and Pamela Rice, 10) of Mount Forest, for the musical entertain- ent and other services they provide for the residents of a local nursing home.
