Letter to the editor Riddell clarifies term 'women's health centres' THE EDITOR: I feel it is important to clarify the situation regarding the recent announcement by my colleague Minister of Health Elinor Caplan of the first of a series of regional women’s health centres being established at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. From the types of comments I have been receiving, it has become apparent that many people are under the mistaken impression that these centres will actually be “abortion clinics’’. This is defi nitely not the case. This centre, and those which will follow in other areas of the province, will provide a wide range of education, counselling and referral services to women. These will include family planning and birth control, infertility counsell ing, pre-menstrual syndrome and menopause education and sup port, counselling on alternatives to abortion, and referral for women seeking therapeutic abortions. Free standing abortion clinics remain illegal under the federal criminal code, and neither myself nor the government of which lama part support the operating of these “free standing” clinics. Abortions will continue to be performed only in accredited hospitals, following the approval of therapeutic abor tion committees, as is the case now. The centres will provide only pre- and post-abortion counsell ing, as well as providing a referral service to those seeking abortions, advising them of which hospitals do perform this service. Itis my hope that provision of better counselling services in the centres will help to minimize the number of unwanted pregnancies by enhancing awareness of birth control while at the same time ensuring that women have acess to the services they need. Jack Riddell MPP - Huron Minister of Agriculture and Food Allan Carter heads Huron Holstein Club executive The 1988 executive members and area directors of the Huron County Holstein Club were named at the organization's annual meet ing held in Brussels on November 24. AllanCarterof RR 4, Clinton, was elected president to succeed Lyle Martin of Ethel, while Joe Winkel of RR 1, Fordwich, was elected as vice-president and Betty Jones of RR 3, Goderich, remains as secretary-treasurer. Appointed as new Area Direc tors for a two-year term were the following: Area 1 - Neil Vincent of RR3, Wingham and Paul Gibbings of RR 1, Clinton join Terry Buchanan of RR 1, Belgrave and Robert Vodden of RR 1, Clinton, who are in their second year. Area II - John Weirsmaof RR 1, Blyth and Joe Winkel join Directors Lyle Bean support program extended The Ontario and federal govern ments have announced changes to the crop income stabilization pro gram. Th deadline for signing up for the tripartite white bean and colored bean stabilization program has been extended to December 31. The tripartite programs for these two crops were new pro grams that were announced this past summer. The original sign-up date for white beans was August31, and for colored beans, October 31. The producer enrolment fees for the program are $18.20 per tonne for white beans and $18.50 per tonne for colored beans. Producers already enrolled had their fees collected when they sold their crop. Producers not enrolled must pay this fee when they enroll. Enrolment fees are not returned to the producer. If you have not yet signed up for the program, you will still have a chance before the end of the year. Enrolment forms for the white bean crop are being mailed by the Ontario White Bean Board to producers. Colored bean forms will be available the week of December 14 from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office. If you enrolled in the provincial Income Stabilization Program for crops this fall (deadline October 1), you should take note of a change in that program. Many producers across the province reaped exceptional yields on some of their crops this year, especially white beans, soyabeans and corn. The Stabilization Com mission is allowing enrolled pro ducers to increase their number of tonnes they have enrolled for any crop by an additional 25 per cent. To do so, producers must obtain an enrolment form for their additional tonnage from their local Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office, and return the form before December 31. Martin and David Ten Pas of RR 2, Wingham. Area III - Larry Baer of RR 5, Goderich was elected to join Allan Carter, but Area III still needs a third director. If anyone is interested, they are asked to contact Mrs. Jones at 395-3151. Mrs. Jones reports that no Top Production Certificates were awarded to any dairy animals in Ontario this year because of administration problems caused by the switch-over from the federal ROP program to the provincial Dairy Herd Improvement pro gram, but she said that officials with the program feel that the difficulties will be ironed out, and certificates will be awarded again in the future. In 1986, Kennairn Farms of RR 3, Blyth, was awarded certificates for the top two-year- old, the top three-year-old and the top four-year-old cows in Huron County, while Glen McNeil of RR 6, Goderich, won the awards for top aged cow and top senior yearling. The guest speaker at the meet ing was Dr. Carol Byinga, a veterinarian with the Listowel Clinic, who spoke on her recent trip to Australia. Bob McNeil of the Ontario Milk and Cream Producers reported on his association’s convention in Barrie last February, and also spoke on the Distinguished Farmer Award available to young dairy farmers in Ontario. He said awards are granted on the basis of excellence in both dairy production improvement and in volvement in the community, and said that any farmer between the ages of 21 and 30 is eligible for application. Last year Sean Drenn an of Lucknow was the Huron County representative at the area level for the award. Mr. McNeil said that applica tions must be in to Holstein Club secretary Betty Jones by January 6, 1987; she may be contacted at 395-3151 for more information. The 1988 Organizational Meet ing of the Huron County Holstein Club was held on December 11 at the Triple K Restaurant in Blyth.
