The Citizen, 1987-12-09, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1987 Little Joel Hemingway of RR 3, Brussels was truly amazed to find himself right next to Santa Claus at the Brussels Legion following Saturday ’ s Santa Claus parade in the village. Besides getting a big bag of candy and fruit from the old saint, hundreds of kids like Joel were treated to a free magic show. Harriet Boon new fair bd. secretary Mrs. Harriet Boon, RR 2, Bluevale, was named the new secretary-treasurer of the Brussels Agricultural Society at a meeting of the officers of the Society Dec. 1. Mrs. Boon succeeds Rose-Marie Bishop, RR 1, Ethel. John McIn tosh, president of the Society presented Rose Marie with a quartz watch for her work over the past nine years on behalf of the fair board. In other business it was announ ced the annual meeting of the Society will be held at Duff’s Church, Walton on Wednesday, January 20. The constitution of the group was received and 50 copies will be made available for the annual meeting. A donation of $500 will be given to the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Committee. Majestic Wl holds euchre The Majestic Women’s Institute held a euchre party in the Brussels library with nine tables. The following were prize winn ers: high lady, Jean Bridge; low lady, Edith Baker; high man, Garnet Nicholson; low man, Tom MacFarlane; travelling lone hand, Leona Armstrong; birthday near- estChristmas, George Laverty; most lone hands, Ross Cunning ham; most zeroes, Richard Lind berg; lucky cup, Jean Bridge. Lunch was served by Peggy Cudmore, Jane De Vries and Leona Armstrong. Council briefs Power outage brings bill A bill from Todd’s Bakery for $120 worth of baked goods had councillors wondering if there had been a party they hadn’t heard of when Brussels council met Mon day nightbutthey found outthe dough was just for dough that didn’t have a hot time. Public Utilities Commission workmen had to replace a trans former at the corner of Thomas and Turnberry streets recently and warned the local businesses that there would be a power interrup tion . They didn ’ t realize the bakery was served from that transformer, however, and the batch of baked goods was ruined. Thus the bill. Councillors didn’t have to worry though. It will be the PUC, not the village, that will pay the bill. ***** A request from Bill McWhirter to have taxes lowered on the old creamery building while he fixed it up was turned down by council. Mr. McWhirter had understood that if he asked council for its permission to reduce the taxes it could inform the Regional Assess ment Office to do so but Hugh Hanly, clerk-treasurer, told him it was the assessment office that told the village what to do, not the other way around. However, he said, with the village being reassessed last year it might turn out that the assessment has already been lowered on the building because of its poor state of repair. He told council he would phone the assessment office in Goderich and find out.***** Council and PUC will meet soon to negotiate salaries for municipal employees for the coming year. Indications are the employees can expect raises. “There’s money in this town for everything that comes along so I think the people who run the town should be properly paid, ’ ’ Reeve Gordon Workman said. Each municipal employee was asked what he or she felt was a fair amount of payment and a meeting will be held by the councillors and commissioners later to come to an agreement.***** An estimate for the refinishing of the wooden floors of the Brussels Library in the amount of $2,642.50 was accepted by council. Paul Rintoul will be contracted to do the work. $1,000 of the amount needed will come from a donation from the Brussels Homecoming Commit tee. A further $1,000 from the Committee will be used for furni ture for downstairs. Council also approved the pur chase of mats to protect the library floor from salt and water damage.***** As it stands now there will be at least one vacancy on council when election time rolls around in Brussels nextfall. Councillor Betty Graber indicated she won’t be standingforcouncil for another term because she will no longer be a qualified elector. Her residence is just across the border in Morris township but with abusiness in Brussels she had run for council. Since the business is no longer operating she will not be eligible in the next election as it stands now.***** The probationary term of Don Crawford has been completed and he was accepted by the councillors and PUC as a full-time employee with salary to be negotiated later. ***** Council agreed to go ahead and connect up a home that has never been connected to the sanitary sewer system and charge the cost to the owner’s taxes if he refuses to pay. This is the second such case the village has tackled. Under the by-law when sewers were installed all homemakers had so long to hook-up to the system and could be fined and have the system hooked up anyway if they failed to comply. Council also decided it wanted a trailer removed from the trailer park despite the fact it may have been sold to a new owner since council earlier asked the trailer be moved. Deadline for removal of the trailer was Dec. 10. Meanwhile legal progress remains slow in an attempt to evict another trailer from the park. Reeve Gordon Workman expressed displeasure at the work of the village’s legal firm and suggested council should look elsewhere for legal advice in the future if service doesn’t improve. ***** Council will advertise for several openings on boards and commit tees as the new year, the time for BRUSSELS UNITED CHURCH King Street MINISTER: REVERENDCHARLESCARPENTIER Sunday Morning Worship 11:00a.m. Church School Nursery We have this Hope as an anchor for our lives.
