Brussels rally fails to catch Blyth in exciting Atom game BY RUSTY BLADES Last Wednesday, November 25 the Blyth Atoms hosted the Brussels Atoms in one of the most exciting games I’ve witnessed this season. Jerrod Button celebrated his return to the ice this season as he openedthescoringafteronly 25 seconds of play in the game. Christopher Howson and Michael Bromley garnered assists on the play. Before the period had ended, Brussels struck for two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second frame. Brian McNichol tied the game for Blyth halfway through the second period with an unassisted goal as he weaved his way around several opposition players. Brus sels quickly restored their lead one minute later before Brian McNich ol tied the gameonce more as he stole the puck at centre ice and deposited the puck in the top corner of the net. Blyth Tykes get off Blyth Atom B's tie Huron Park 1-1 After a week of no games the Atom B team travelled to Huron Park on Saturday. From the opening face-off the Blyth boys showed the fans they were in Huron Park to play and to win. After the first period despite numerous chances, our boys failed topush the puck pastthe Huron Park goalie. The second period saw the same style of play, good hard work by both teams. Hard digging in the Blyth end resulted in the first goal of the game being scored by Huron Park. In the third period Huron Park put the pressure on the Blyth boys but good solid goaltending by Josh Yanchus kept the score at 1-0 for Huron Park. Halfway through the third period Tim Lyons broke out of Blyth found themselves in a hole late in the period as two Blyth skaters were taking a breather in the penalty box. McNichol came to the rescue however with two quick goals which deflated an enthusias tic Brussels team. With 1:11 left in the period, Brian notched the hat trick as he stuffed in the rebound of a P,eter Craig shot. Brian took the ensuing face off and gave Blyth a 5-3 lead 11 seconds later with yet another goal while playing two men short. Blyth carried this momentum into the third and built an 8-3 lead. Ryan Chamney scored Blyth’s third straight short-handed goal with a quick wrist shot to the short side. Peter Craig then scored an unassisted goal on another one of his spectacular rink-length rushes. Michael Bromley finally found the mark as he also recorded an unassisted tally to give Blvth what seemed like an insurmountable 8-3 lead. the Blyth end on a breakaway but was stopped by the Huron Park goalie. The puck then went in the corner where Benji Hakkers slapp- ed itbackinfront of the-net. Tim Lyons took the puck and flicked it in the upper corner. Relief showed on the coaches faces since the boys hard work finally paid off. Tight checking by both teams kept the game close all the time and provided the fans with very entertaining hockey. The final score was 1-1. Congratulations is extended to Terry Rutledge, Wayne McDougall and the boys on the Novice A team, as they beat Plattsville in overtime in Seaforth on Sunday, score 2-1. With the win the team became consolation champs in the “B” division of the Seaforth tournament. But with the decibel level reaching deafening proportions in the stands, Brussels mounted a comeback. They scored a short handed goal, a power play goal and an even-strength goal as they narrowed the lead. Time ran out on these determined teams with Blyth emerging 8-6 victors. It was an exciting and entertaining game with promises of more to come as the season progresses. The Blyth Atoms have a busy schedule this week as they travel to Milverton on Monday, host Zurich on Wednesday, then finish the week on Saturday with a game in Huron Park. Despite the score Scott Bromley played well in net as the Blyth team was overpowered. Blyth travelled to Zurich for a close, well played game. Corey Shannon played well in net. Michael Courtney netted his first goal with a pass from behind the net by Darryl Bromley. Zurich tied the game, but Darryl Bromley scored on a break-away to win the game in regulation time. But extra time was available so 10 more minutes were played. Zurich took advantage of this and netted two fast goals to win 3-2 in a well-played game. In the first league game Blyth out-skated Bayfield 9-1. Darryl Bromley led the team with six goals. Corey Shannon along with Chris Carter and Michael Ansley picked up their first goals of the year.
