Limited edition Rockwell plates escalate in value This plate features Norman Rockwell artwork originally creat ed for a Western Union Telegram advertisement which appeared in 1935. It shows a classic Santa with a red cap and a white beard, hanging a golden ornament on some lucky child’s Christmas tree. The 13 previous issues in the Rockwell Christmas series are among more than 6,000 past issues available on the “secondary mar ket,’’ where prices rise and fall depending on supply and demand. When limited-edition plates are new, they are sold to collectors at issue price on the primary market. Once an edition is closed, no more plates are produced, so these past issues are only available from a collector, a dealer or The Bradford Exchange, the world’s largest trading center for collector’s plates. Despite the fact that they are traded regularly, many of these plates are still available at reason able prices. For example, the 1977 Rockwell Society Christmas plate, entitled “Toy Shop Window,” currently sells for $35. It shows a brother and sister amazed by the wonders on display at the local toy shop. And last year’s Rockwell Christ mas plate - “Deer Santy Claus” - can be purchased for about $40. It depicts Santa thoughtfully con templating a little girl asleep beneath a patchwork quilt, with a letter addressed to “Deer Santy Claus” tied to her bedpost. Another 1986 secondary market plate which makes a beautiful, yet affordable Christmas gift is “The Gifts of the Magi.” The second plate in a Christmas series featuring work by well known contemporary artist Edna Hibel, it is available for approxi mately $50. Gift plates are cherished tradition The holiday season is a time filled with cherished traditions, such as decorating the tree, baking dozens of Santa-shaped cookies, and hanging stockings over the fireplace. Another time-honored Christ mas tradition is giving and receiv ing limited-edition collector’s plates, which feature artwork in a variety of styles from traditional to contemporary. Plate collecting began with a Christmas plate when the Danish porcelain house of Bing &Gron- dahl issued the first true limited edition plate - “Behind the Frozen Window’’ - in 1895. Ever since then, collector’s plates have proven to be one of the most enduring and popular of Christmas presents. The newest Christmas issues are available at gift shops and collecti bles dealers for prices generally ranging from $25 to $75. Among the most highly regard ed of the 1987 selections are two plates from the Edwin M. Knowles China Company. “The Annunciation’’ is the first plate in a new Christmas series debutingthisyear: The Story of Christmas by Eve Licea. This beautiful square-shaped plate depicts the angel Gabriel’s announcementtoMary that she will be the mother of the Christ Child. A combination of bas relief, geometric and natural designs, in gold and bold colors, makes “The Annunciation’’ a stunning exam ple of the distinctive style which Christmas Seal goal for Huron-Perth is $70,000 The Annual Christmas Seal Campaign is now underway. Each year The Lung Association sends a package containing specially- designed Christmas Seals to ap proximately 40,000 households in Huron-Perth Counties. Victor Crapnell, anOttawaartist, sub mitted the winning design for the 1987 Christmas Seals. Christmas Seals and The Christ mas Seal Campaign represent the spirit of giving and helping others. Eighty years ago when tuberculo sis was the dreaded “white plague”, Christmas Seals raised enough money to build sanatoria and later to make chest x-rays available to all. Today, The Lung has earned artist Eve Licea so many fans. When the annual six-plate series is completed, it will form a wall mural illustrating the Biblical Christmas story. Another excellent gift choice is the latest addition to the long- running Rockwell Society Christ mas series: “Santa’s Golden CHRISTMAS SALE! Now On At...
