jSs^Nort/i Huron Gift Guide
Christmas shopping can be like an
Olympics - Here’s how to win
Christmas shopping often re
quires the stamina of an Olympic
athlete. For weeks before the big
holiday, gift-givers compete in
buying events, including the 50-
store dash, the parking space
sprint, the salesperson tackle, the
grab-the-last-one-left run, the
check-out counter hurdle and the
return-it relay.
Sound familiar? Just the thought
of this annual shopping marathon
is enough to make even the most
seasoned shopper break into a cold
sweat.
But you don’t have to go into
training to find gifts that will please
the favourite guy on your holiday
shopping list.
With a little planning, you can
find gifts that will give him a fresh,
fashionable look for the New Year -
and reduce your shopping to one
store.
The Arrow Company, a leading
manufacturer of men ’ s dress shirts
and sportswear, offers these sug
gestions to keep your Christmas
spirits high:
PLAN AHEAD - AT HOME
Send him - and the children - out
for a few hours to wherever you
send them when you want to be
alone.
When the coast is clear, grab a
piece of paper and a pen and make a
preliminary shopping list with
headings for items that need
replacing, things to fill in obvious
gaps in his wardrobe, and new
piecestogivehim afashionable
new look.
Addcolumnsfor his favourite
colors and the colors in which you
think he looks best, and a list of his
sizes.
Now, head for his closet. Go
through what he already owns and
fill in your list as much as possible.
Be sure to check out his style
preferences. For example, do his
favourite dress shirts have button
down or spread collars?
list a shirt of chambray, flannel,
corduroy or one of the new
garment-washed shirts that have
the look and feel of being comfort
ably worn.
Be flexible. Give yourself sever
al alternative selections for each
item. Then, when you begin
shopping, you won’t have to run all
The store is all out of royal blue
sweaters in his size? Well, you
know he looks great in red. Pick a
red one instead.
Selections complete? Head
straightfor the cashier. Collect
your bags containing your gift
trophies and head straight for
home. You’ve won the Christmas
shopping Olympics!

Now you 're ready to finalize your
shopping list.
Check off the things you wish to
replace or add to his wardrobe.
Then make a note of style choices
and several color options for each
item, keeping the following tips in
mind.
The easiest way to update a
business suit is to purchase a shirt
of a different color. Even the most
conservative guy can add pink,
seafoam green or maize to his
collection of white and pale blue
dress shirts.
Another quick update is to give
him a patterned shirt. Newest for
the coming season are those with
strong two-color stripes or narrow
repeatingpatternsonawhite or
pastel background.
The more fashionable man will
be wearing relaxed fit shirts, a
silhouette which is slightly larger
and looser over all.
Thinking about sportswear?
Bold colors like royal, blue, red,
jade, gold and purple will lead the
waW, followed closely by pastel
combinations like pink and laven
der.
Sportswear styles are oversized
and comfortable. Rugby or henley
collar shirts in bright solids or bold
stripings will please just about any
guy-
Sweaters, in either solid colors
or the latest contemporary mixed
patterns will really spice up his
wardrobe.
For a final touch of newness,
think about adding a shirt in one of
the new fabric finishes. Add to your

exact style or color.
PICK A STORE
If you’ve planned completely
and flexibly, you should be able to
do all your shopping for him in one
session in one store.
Select a store or men’s specialty
shop which has a large selection of
merchandise in styles and sizes
that suit him.
List in hand, head for the store
you’ve selected. Once there, go
straight to the men’s department,
no matter what else catches your

We are giving a combination
anniversary-holiday party, and we
really don’t want gaests to send or
bring gifts. How - and where -
should I say so on the invitations?
Don’t ruin your pretty invitations
by putting a negative “Nogifts,
please’’on them. Passing the word
among your best friends that you
really don’t want any presents is a
far more graceful way of making
your wishes known.
Is it more elegant to send holiday
cards with your name printed on
them, instead of those just signed
by hand?
Itdoesn’tmatterifyour name is
printed on the card. What does
matter is that each card contain a
handwritten personal message,
even if it is just a few words (‘ ‘ Hope
your New Year will be a wonderful
one!’’). And be sure to sign your
cards even if your name is printed
on them.
