The Citizen, 1987-11-25, Page 11THE CITKEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1987. PAGE 11. What toll's worth it to toll the town bell Blyth village councillors will have to decide soon just how much it is worth to the village to hear the town bell in Memorial Hall rung on a regular basis. Councillor Bill Howson told council he had been able to find a firm in London that could supply a system that would ring the bell automatically. Council had been looking for an automatic system since it had been suggested earlier Personal finance, outdoors next 4H projects Two exciting new 4-H Club projects are being planned for early in the New Year for Huron County young people between the ages of 12 to 21. while a third new project has been announced for the fall of 1988. The Personal Finance project, starting in January and February, will appeal tomembers over the age of 15. as it involves planning your financial future, understand ing the role of banks and the importance of credit, among a number of other topics designed to help the young person who is soon tohead out into the world on his own. The Encounter the Outdoors project, duetostartinFebruary and March, will appeal to all age groups as they learn to work co-operatively, make new friends and have fun in the out-of-doors. Sessions will include lighting fires, setting up a shelter, learning cooking and photographic skills, predicting the weather, and sur viving safely outdoors, and will culminate in an outing planned by all club members. Planned for the fall of 1988, Much Ado About Meats will give members an opportunity to learn howtobuy, store and cook beef, veal, pork and lamb. Jane Muegge, OMAF organiza tional, specialist in Clinton, says that anyone interested in joining these new clubs should advise their leaders as soon as possible, or give her a call at 482-3428. this year that having the bell ring again would add to the uniqueness of the town. In days gone by a town employee rang the bell at noon every day and at one time the bell was rung more often than that. Councillor Howson said the London firm could supply two different systems. One would swing the bell to ring it, just as happens now when the rope is pulled. Such a system would cost about $3,400. A system that would use an electric striker leaving the bell stationary, would cost $2,600. The tone of the bell would be same but it might not be as loud with the second method, he said. Reeve Albert Wasson said that it appeared the village had some surplus funds available if they wanted to go ahead with the project this year. “In my opinion, if we’re going to do it we should do it as close to the original as possible,” he said, opting for the more expensive system. Councillor Howson said swinging the bell would require repairing the wheel the bell is mounted which the striker system wouldn’t. Councillor Bill Manning won dered about the advisability of the whole project. “I wonder how essential it is to spend either $2,600 or $3,400 to ring a bell,” he said. “That maybe true but there are some things that are unique to the village,” Reeve Wasson said The huge bell (which Councillor Mann ing said come out of the old Blyth fire hall) was an asset to the village, he said. Councillor Howson admitted he had mixed feelings on the cost of the project. Councillor Manning said that if the mechanism could be trouble free for five years the cost might not be so bad but he wondered if the money mightn’t be as well provid ing a job by hiring someone to ring the bell. There were two ways of looking at the ringing of the bell he Inearlierdays, carrotswere a specialprize toNorth American Indians; they would remove them from settlers’ gardens, while leaving behind the other crops. 1987 Chev Pick-up, heavy duty 1986 GMC 72 ton 1986 Pontiac Bonneville, 4 door [2 to choose from) 1985 Pontiac Bonneville L.E., 4 door 1985 Dodge Aires wagon with air conditioning 1985 Chevette, 4 dr. 1984 Olds Delta 88 Brougham, 4 door 1984 Pontiac, 4 door station wagon 1983 Cougar L.S., 2 dr., air 1979 Chrysler Newport, 4 door HAMM’S CAR SALES Blyth 523-4342 •Gas Pumps •Repairs to most makesand models said. Councillor Howson said that if the money was spent he would be very disappointed if the equipment wasn’t trouble free for at least 10 years. Council eventually asked that Councillor Howson do more re search into the project before council makes a decision on whether or not to go ahead.
