The Citizen, 1987-11-25, Page 9Former Huron M.P.P. Charlie McNaughton dies Long-time Huron county M. P. P. and former cabinet minister Char­ lie MacNaughton died Nov. 17 in Exeter. He was 76. He was first elected to the legislature in a by-election in 1958 after serving the Exeter area both as a school trustee and a founding director of the South Huron Hospital. He defended his seat in general election sin 1959, 1963, 1967 and 1971 before retiring midway through his final term. He served under three premiers, during the lengthy 40-year Pro­ gressive Conservative hold on power in Ontario: Leslie Frost, John Robarts and William Davis. He became the minister of highways in 1961 after serving as commissioner of the Ontario Water Resources Commission in 1960-61. He held the highways post during the huge highway building period that saw the completion of High­ way 401 and the widening of the highway through Toronto. He was also the minister when GO transit was begun. Later he served as provincial treasurer, chairman of the man­ agement board of cabinet and minister of economics, govern­ ment affairs and revenue. He was chairman of the success­ ful leadership campaign of Mr. David in 1971. After retiring from politics he served as chairman of the Ontario Racing Commission and was hon­ orary chairman or on the board of directors of such firms as the Bank of Montreal, Consumers Gas, Redpath Industries, Extendicare Ltd. and Laidlaw Transport. He had been born in Strasbourg, Sask, and grew up in Brandon, Manitoba. He married the former Adeline Fulcher of Brandon. The couple moved to Exeter in 1944 and Mr. MacNaughton esta­ blished a seed business which he sold in I960., He is survived by one daughter, Heather Howitt of Windsor and one son, John of Toronto. They are pretending to buy pizzas, and count out the money for this math session. The grade four class are also busy making their personality cubes. They take large cardboard boxes and cover them with pictures and information about themselves. They are reading and doing activities with the Clinton News Record each week. Also, they have been interview­ ing a person who was not born in Canada to find out what made families from other countries move to Canada. PROVINCIAL PARKS Doreen Cardiff came to Hullett and introduced them to Ontario’s many provincial parks. She also informed them about an essay contest about this topic. All entries must be in by November 26. Citizen's annual Thursday The second annual meeting of North Huron Publishing Company Inc. (TheCitizen) willbe held at The Citizen’s Blyth office on Thursday, Nov. 26. The meeting, at 8 p.m., will see reports on the activities of the paper over the past year ending Sept. 30. As well as the financial report, reports on advertising and circulation growth will be heard. All shareholders of The Citizen are invited to attend.
