Brussels Public School music program gets boost The flutes, trumpets and bari tones have arrived at Brussels Public School, and 59 enthusiastic Grade 6, 7 and 8 students are being instructed in instrumental music for three periods each week by music teacher Phil Parsons. The program was helped along lastFridayby substantial dona tions from several local organiza tions, with representatives from each presenting cheques to Mr. Parsons in a brief ceremony in the school library. Reeve Doug Fraser presented a chequefor $700 on behalf of the Township of Morris; Gerrit Van Keulen, president of the Brussels Lions Club, made a donation of $1,200 on behalf of his club; Don Armstrong, president of the Brus sels Optimists, also presented $1,200; Helen Craig, president of the Walton Women’s Institute, gave $50; and Jack McCutcheon, Inside Guard of the Western Star Lodge of the Brussels Oddfellows, also presented a cheque for $50. Added to the earlier donations from the Brussels Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Brussels Majestic Women's Institute, the school staff, and a private individual, Friday’s presentation brought the total donated so far to $3,875. However, Mr. Parsons says that even after the payment of $2,280 in user fees, the total cost of the program will still be more than $4,000 short of its expected price of more than $10,000, all of which will go toward the purchase price of the instruments. “The community has been astoundingly generous up to this time, ’’ Mr. Parsons said. “And since we have barely got the program started, we feel very confident that the rest of the money won’t be long in coming in.’’ Brussels is one of only three elementary schools in Huron County which has an instrumental music program in place at the Institute; Doug Fraser, on behalf of Morris Twp.; Don Armstrong, on behalf of the Brussels Optimists Club; J.A. McCutcheon, on behalf of Western Star Lodge #149, Brussels Oddfellows; and Gerrit Van Keulen, on behalf of the Brussels Lions Club. Brussels Public School’s new instrumental music program got a healthy boost last week as music teacher Phil Parsons, left, accepted donations from Helen Craig, on behalf of the Walton Women’s yjll [jf J ■■ present time. Since all five ot the county’s secondary schools have excellent band and music pro grams, it is felt that students going onfromthe Brussels school will have an added advantage in musical skills when they enter high school. The program was made possible this year with the transfer of Mr. Parsons, who established a similar program at Howick Central School while teaching there.
