Sports lyth Atoms get fast start BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms opened their W.O.A.A. regular schedule last Wednesday in Zurich where they built a first period 5-0 lead and hung on for a 7-2 triumph. Blyth opened the scoring after only seven seconds had elapsed in the game as centreman Michael Bromley took the opening face-off and deftly moved through the entire team toregister the goal. Michael Bromley and Christopher Howson assisted on the second goal as Brian McNichol tipped in a goalmouth pass. Michael Bromley scored his second of the game as he cashed in the rebound of a Jamie Bromley point shot. Twenty seconds later, James McNichol scored on a pass outfrombehindthe net by Ryan Crusaders open home season Sunday Chamney. Blyth scored a short- handed goal in the final minute of the period as Michael Bromley recorded his hat-trick with assists from Christopher Howson and Jamie Bromley. The scoring settled down in the second frame as Blyth scored the only goal for a 6-0 lead. Defence­ man Peter Craig completed a spectacular end to end rush with an unassisted goal on a fine wrist shot. Blythgotinto penalty trouble early in the third period as Zurich got back into the game with two power play goals. However, Blyth recovered and scored a late goal for a 7-2 win. Ryan Chamney dented the twine on a goalmouth scramble with assists from Michael Bromley and Henry Bos. Blyth plays a home game Play continued for another six minutes before Thedford scored to tonight, Wednesday, November lias Huron Park hits town for a 7:15 showdown. WRAP UP CHRISTMAS^ EARD^g^ LARGE GEMSTONE RINGS a 2-1 lead. The Bulls came back with 3:17 left in the period when Tim Fritz scored from Stuart Bowman to tie the score once more. Brussels scored the only goal in the second 20 minutes of play when Mike Chapman scored from Stuart Bowman and Mike Vincent mid­ way through the period. Thedford scored after just a minute of the third period had been played to tie the game at three. They had played seven minutes of the third when Tim Fritz scored from Bob McMillan to put the Bulls in the lead once more. There was just 2:24 left on the clock when Mike Vincent scored his second goal from Bill Haines and Paul Robinson to complete the scoring and give Brussels 5-3 victory over the visitors. LOSE 4-2 TO BELMONT The Bulls travelled to Belmont on Saturday night to play their second weekend game. The Bulls opened the scoring after playing just 3 minutes 37 seconds when Ron Strome scored from Murray Houghton and Tim Fritz. They added their second goal at the 8:16 mark when Mike Vincent scored from Paul Robinson and Mike Chapman to give Brus­ sels a 2-0 lead. There was 1:45 left in the first period when Belmont got their first goal of the game. They got their second goal off the face-off in the second period to quickly tie the game at two. It proved to be the only goal of the period. Belmont broke the tie with 15:34 on the clock in the third period to take a 3-2 lead. They added an insurance marker at 7:31 towin the game at 4-2. Goalie Jeff McGavin played a strong game as Belmont out-shot the Bulls38-28inclaiming their victory. Next week will have the Bulls travelling to Mt. Brydges on Saturday night to play hockey. Sunday afternoon will have them at home to Mitchell for a 2 p.m. start and then they will be at home for a mid-week game on Wednesday nightat 8:45 p.m. when Clinton Mustangs will be the visitors. Blyth House league Atoms tie BY SIL VER SKATES On Saturday, the Atoms travell­ ed to Bayfield for their first regular game of the season. The first period of the game was scoreless with lots of action from both teams. Halfway into the second period Bayfield scored the first goal of the game, but before the period was over Blyth player Benjie Hakkers scored, assisted by Shawn Hakkers and Tim Lyons. The third period was tense with lots of shots on net with many near goals, but Josh Yanchus did well in stopping them. Many just missed going in, hitting the goal posts or the crossbar for both teams, but each team held its own leaving the game tied 1 -1 at the end of the third period. Last week we named one of the coaches as Joe Fraser; this should have been Randy Fraser, Joe’s father. We apologize for the error. BY HUGH NICHOL The W.O.A.A. Intermediate hockey program is under way with teams entered for the 1987-88 season. The teams have been dividedintoaNorthand a South Division for regular schedule play. As well, Drayton and Milverton will be hosting tournaments during the season. The Northern Loop consists of the defending grand champion Lions Head North Stars, the Durham 72’s, Kincardine Kings, Ripley Roosters, Lucknow Lancers and Teeswater Falcons. The Southern Division is home to the Arthur Tigers, Drayton Comets, St. Clements Saints, Wellesley Merchants, Milverton 4-Wheel Drives, Monkton Wild­ cats, Brussels Crusaders and a new entry, The Seaforth Sea-Hawks. Last season the Brussels Crusa­ ders were the Int. B. finalists, losing a hard fought series against Wellesley. Individually the goal­ tending trio of Keith McClure, Mike Smith and Rob Stute won the trophy for lowest goals against average, while the duo of Dave Stephenson and Ken Cousins tied for the goal-scoring championship. The Crusaders home opener is scheduled for Sunday, November 15 vs. Drayton. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Oldtimers in tournament The Blyth “Radfords Over­ loads’’ Oldtimers will compete in the Blyth Minor Sports Hockey Tournament this weekend. The Overloads first game will be at 9 p.m. Friday evening. On Monday, Nov. 2, the Wing­ ham Goodtimers were in Blyth for a game against the Overloads. The game settled into a defensive struggle from the start with neither team giving the opponent much skating room. Winghamopened the scoring midway through the second peri­ od. Blyth tied the score early in the third period on a goal by Doug Scrimgeour, assisted by Wayne McDougall and Gary Courtney. Wingham took a 2-1 lead and Blyth was forced to open up and press for the equalizer which resulted in several two-on-ones and three-on- ones by the Wingham team. The final score was 7 to 1.
