Historic Walton Schoolhouse takes a ride
is historic Walton building took a
short journey last week to make
room for progress.
The “second school’’ on the
property of McGavin Farm Equip
ment was moved from its old
location beside County Road 12 to
the rear portion of the McGavin lot.
Immediately after the building was
off its foundation, workmen moved
in to pour footings for a new
addition to the McGavin building
for more display room.
The old school was built in 1920
to be used as ajunior classroom
after the brick school house next
door (now the main McGavin
building) became overcrowded. It
was built under the supervision of
John Shortreed and Roy Bennett. It
was covered with red asphalt
shingles and trimmed with yellow
paint and included all the con
veniences like indoor toilets.
The building was used only until
1932 and then, along with the red
brick school was sold to Gordon
McGavin when the new Walton
school opened in 1962.
Brian McGavin said the old

sound when the moving crew
jacked it up and prepared to move
it.
The building will be used as an
unheated storage space. Mr.
McGavin said it was much cheaper
to move the old school than it would
be to construct a new storage shed.
One of Walton’s two old school houses took a ride Wednesday when McGavin Farm Equipment had the
1920 building moved to thebackof its lotto make room for a new addition to the farm equipment
dealership. The building was reported as sound as ever structurally.
