Historic Walton Schoolhouse takes a ride is historic Walton building took a short journey last week to make room for progress. The “second school’’ on the property of McGavin Farm Equip­ ment was moved from its old location beside County Road 12 to the rear portion of the McGavin lot. Immediately after the building was off its foundation, workmen moved in to pour footings for a new addition to the McGavin building for more display room. The old school was built in 1920 to be used as ajunior classroom after the brick school house next door (now the main McGavin building) became overcrowded. It was built under the supervision of John Shortreed and Roy Bennett. It was covered with red asphalt shingles and trimmed with yellow paint and included all the con­ veniences like indoor toilets. The building was used only until 1932 and then, along with the red brick school was sold to Gordon McGavin when the new Walton school opened in 1962. The building will be used as an unheated storage space. Mr. McGavin said it was much cheaper to move the old school than it would be to construct a new storage shed. He was 91 years of age. He was born in McKillop Township, the son of Robert Reid and the former Catherine Camp­ bell. HewaseducatedatS.S. No. 7, McKillop. On June 22,1933 he married the former Annie Johnston (McTag- gart). The couple farmed until 1959 when they sold the farm and Mr. Reid spent several years trucking gravel. He was a member of Duff’s United Church, Walton. Besides his wife, Mr. Reid is survivedby two sisters, Mrs. Edna Hackwell, Seaforth and Mrs. Lawrence, (Marjorie), Ryan, Wal­ ton. He waspredeceasedbytwo Asters, Hattie, Mrs. Jeo Hackwell, and Ethel, Mrs. Elmer Hackwell. The funeral service was held on Nov. 7, 1987 from the Brussels Chapel of the M.L. Watts Funeral Homes. Rey. Bonnie Lamble offi­ ciated. Soloist was Mrs. Marie McGavin who sang, “Unto the Hills’’. Pianist was Mrs. Margery Huether. Interment was in Maitlandbank Cemetery, Seaforth. Serving as pallbearers were Campbell Wey, Doug Fraser, Roy Williamson, Ken Shortreed, Jack McIlwain and Bill Courts. Flower- Dinner well attended bearers were Brian McGavin, Danny Achilles, Doug Wey and Clayton Fraser. IS GETTING MORE.
