Sports Blyth runners top field at cross country meet Bulls win, lose, tie in week's play BY LOIS McARTER The Junior D Bulls had a rather hectic week of hockey. They played a mid-week game at home against Seaforth. The first two periods of play were kept relatively close but the Bulls exploded for five third period goals to pick up a 10 - 3 victory. The first period had Mike Vincent scoring from Ron Trome andDougTaylorafterjustthree minutes of play but the second goal didn't come until there wasjust 1:57 left on the clock with Tim Fritz scoring from Vincent and Strome. Within31 seconds Seaforth got theirfirstgoaltoendthe period at 2 - 1 for the Bulls. A minute and a half into the second period had Mike Chapman scoring assisted by Kevin McArter and Chet Hymers. Rod Nicholson and Kevin Johnston combined at 16:18 to give Brussels a 4-1 lead. Seaforth scored goal number twoat 12:04 with Brussels complet ing the second period scoring with 2:14 left when Mike Chapman scored from Bill Haines and Ron Strome. In the first nine minutes of the third period, Chet Hymers, Rob McMillan, Tim Fritz and Paul Edwards scored goals with Mike Chapman, Doug Taylor, Mike Vincent, Ron Strome, Kevin John ston and Trim Fritz gartering in on the assists. Seaforth scored their third goal with four minutes left on the clock with Kevin Johnston adding the tenth Bulls goal at 11:13 assisted by Chet Hymers and Mike Chap man to clench the victory. The Bulls travelled to Exeter on Friday night to play the Hawks and played more the brand of hockey we’re used to seeing the two teams Playing. The usual end-to-end rushes by both teams took place and there was just 3:14 left in the period when Exeter capitalized on a power play effort to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. The second period was almost an identifcal period of play with just 1: 52 left in the period when Stuart Bowman scored from defenceman Bill Haines to tie the score for Brussels. The tie was short lived as Exeter scored with just 47 seconds lefton the clock. The goalie had made the initial stop, but the hard shot managed to get through the goal pads, barely making it over the red line. Play continued in the third period until there was just 4:26 remaining and Exeter blasted a shot into the upper corner for their third goal. They added one more goal with just 29 seconds remain ing to claim the 4-1 victory. The shots on net were 25 for Exeter and 22 for Brussels showing the even calibre of play. Halloween night found the team travelling to Wellesley, the new entry in the group this season. Wellesley scored their first goal after just 3:18 had been played and added four more goals in a span of just six more minutes to take a sudden 5-0 lead after just ten minutes of hockey. Goalie Jeff McGavin pulled himself at this point and was replaced by Greg McClement. Brussels finally got on the score board atthe 16:29 mark when Mike Chapman scoredfromTim Fritz and Paul Edwards. Wellesley added one more before the period ended. The Bulls Bill Haines went in to score on a pass from Stuart Bowman after just 3:35 of play and then defenceman Stuart Bowman broke in to score on a pass from Tim Fritzjust two minutes later for a short-handed goal. Wellesley add ed three more goals before Paul Edwards and Kevin McArter combined for Brussels’ fourth goal. Wellesley scored at the 14:38 mark and then with one minute and 34 seconds remaining in the period Tim Fritz scored from Mike Chapman and Bill Haines. Wellesley scored a minute into the third period and then again at the 7:01 mark. There was just five seconds left on the clock when Kevin McArter scored the only Bulls goal in the third period from defenceman Kevin Lee and Doug Taylor to end the scoring and the game at 12-6 for Wellesley. The score did not indicate the calibre of play as Wellesley had 39 shots on goal and Brussels 37. The Bulls were at home to the Mitchell Hawks on Sunday after noon for a rather rugged game of hockey. There was a lot of stick work being done that was over looked until it was too late and something that isn’t necessary. Mitchell dominated the scoring in the first period getting their first goal after just four minutes of play. They were held off until 3:20 of the period before they scored their second goal and added the third goal with just 1:43 remaining. Bill Haines got Brussels on the scoreboard just 38 seconds into the second period on a pass from Tim Fritz. It wasjust three minutes later when Bill scored his second goal on a pass from Kevin McArter and Ron Strome, to make the score 3-2. The remainder of the period was scoreless for both teams as the Continued on page 21 Kim Medd Two Blyth runners won first place at the Huron-Perth secon dary schools cross-country meet last week and one will go on to take part in the provincial champion ship this weekend in Toronto. His team did not qualify for the provincial event, however.Steve Soach Blyth Atom B's win first 2 games BY SILVER SKATES Another seasonof hockey has started in Blyth and due to increased enrollment this year Blyth has two Atom teams. On Monday, Oct. 26 the Atom house league team with their coaches Ben Hakkers, Joe Fraser and Bill Cowan travelled to Goderich for their first exhbition game of the season. The Blyth boys seemed despondent in the locker room but once they got on the ice they had a good start with Tim Lyons scoring the first goal in the first minute of play, unassisted. Later in the first period Goderich scored ending the first period tied. In the second period Blyth scored the next three goals. Benjie Hakkers assisted by Tim Lyons followed by unassisted goals from Marc Bricker and Tim Cowan, ending the second period 4-1 for Blyth. The third period had another two goals, one from Blyth player Scott Arthur assisted by Marc Bricker, followed by another from Marc assisted by Wilfred Datema and Benjie Hakkers. Goderich scored once more in the last few minutes of the game leaving the score 6-2 for the Blyth Atoms, leaving the Blyth boys surprised to have won. the goalie’s left shoulder, closing the scoring the second period. After a five minute rest Goderich team scored to tie the game four all. The score remained tied for five minutes with good end to end play and goalies Jos yanchus of Blyth and Robert Robinson of Goderich, providing spectacular goal tending for both teams. Blyth broke the dead lock as Aaron Sauve scored on a centering pass from Benjie. Benjie then scored assisted by Tim and Tim then scored assisted by Shawn. Wilfred scored on a good three- way passing play from Scott Arthur, to Marc to Wilfred who slid the puck past the Goderich goalie. Goderich closed out the scoring with five seconds left to play. The solid defensive playing of Joe The Atom house league’s se cond exhibition game was on Saturday, Oct. 31 with Goderich coming down to Blyth. This Goderich team is not the same one they played last Monday night. The game started out with God erich scoring twice in the first seven minutes of play. A minute later Tim Lyons scored assisted by Shawn Hakkers and Benjie Hak kers. Goderich scored once more in the first period with Goderich in the lead by a score of 3-1. The second period had three goals all by Blyth. Wilfred Datema scored, assisted by Marc Bricker. There was some discussion among the fans as to whether or not that puck crossed the goal line. As the old adage says, a team does not get the breaks, they make their own Fraser, David Boonstoppel, Scott breaks. The second goal was unassisted by Wilfred Datema as he stole the puck from a Goderich player and coming from behind the net, neatly tucked it in between the goalie and the post. Seeing how it was done by Wilfred, Tim Lyons lost no time picking up an errant Goderich pass and blasted a high wrist shot over Arthur, Tim Cowan and Aaron Sauve along with a good passing attack by the forwards and Brad Walsh’s determined effort along the boards proved that coach Ben has the team working together on the basic fundamentals of hockey. After a very exciting and entertain ing game the Blyth boys came out ahead 8-5. ¥ There's Still Great Golfing weather ahead PRINTING IS OUR BUSINESS • Colour This is a perfect time to purchase new golf clubs, so you can get the feel of them this fall.
