Steers, heifers in good demand at steady prices
The market at Brussels Stock-
yards on Friday saw steers and
heifers selling on a good demand at
fully steady prices. Cows sold
strong. Veal and pigs sold under
pressure. There were 826 cattle
and 492 pigs on offer.
Choice steers sold from $86 to
$90 with sales to $92 per hundred
weight. Goodsteerswere $83 to
$86.
A steer consigned by Gerald Ball
of RR 1. Embro, weighing 1080 lbs.
sold for $92. with his total offering
of 48 steers averaging 1194 lbs.
selling for an overall price of
$87.34. A charlois steer consigned
by Mac Willits of RR 1, Wingham.
weighing 1190 lbs. sold for $91.75,
with his total lot of 36 steers,
averaging 1126 lbs. selling for an
average price of $87.42. Fourteen
steers consigned by Maple Em
blems Farms of RR 1. Dungannon
averaging 1216 lbs. sold for an
average price of $87.99 and they
had sales to $91.75.
A steer consigned by Bob Hulley
of RR 1, Blyth, weighing 1070 lbs.
sold for $91.75. Thirteen steers
consigned by Jim Hayden of RR 3,
Goderich, averaging 1234 lbs. sold
for an overall price of $87.80 with
sales to $90.75. A white steer
consigned by Zettlerdale Farms of
RR 1, Chepstow, weighing 1130
lbs. sold for $90.50. Four steers
consigned by George Adams of RR
2. Wroxeter, averaging 1218 lbs.
sold for an average price of $86.42,
with sales to $89.75. Eleven steers
consigned- by Murray Wagg of RR
5, Mitchell, averaging 1262 lbs.
sold for an overall price of $88.40,
with sales to $89. Eleven steers
consigned by Doug Wagg of RR 5,
Mitchell, averaging 1231 lbs. sold
for an average price of $88.21.
Choice heifers sold from $85 to
$89 with sales to $91.50. Good
heifers were $80 to $85.
Twenty-one heifers consigned
by George Blake of RR 2, Brussels
averaging 1080 lbs. sold for an
average price of $88.25 with sales
to $91.50. Four heifers consigned
by Bob Hulley of RR 1, Blyth,
averaging 1030 lbs. sold for an
average price of $89.12 with sales
to $90.50. A heifer consigned by
Glen Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale,
sold for $89.75 with his total
offering of 24 heifers averaging 936
lbs. selling for an average price of
$83.36.
A heifer consigned by Ron
Brooks of RR 3, Lucknow sold for
$89.25 with his total offering of 14
heifers averaging 1109 lbs. selling
for an average price of $80.21.
Eight heifers consigned by David
Bowles of RR 3, Brussels, averag
ing 989 lbs. sold for an average
price of $85.58 with sales to $87.50.
Twelve heifers consigned by Wil
lard Metcalfe of RR 2, Cargill,
averaging 930 lbs. sold for an
average price of $83.58 with sales
to $86.75.
Choice cows sold from $57 to $62
with sales to $65.50. Good cows
were $54 to $58. Canners and
cutters were $47 to $54.
Thirty to 40 lb. pigs traded to a
high of $87.50; 40 to 50 lb. pigs
traded to a high of $82.; 50 to 60 lb.
pigs traded to a high of $90.50; 60 to
70 lb. pigs traded to a high of $86;
70 to80 lb. pigs traded to a high of
$85.50.
Choice veal sold from $80 to $90
with sales to $97. Medium veal was
$70 to $80.
Waterloo wins competition
Huron County was host of the
South Western Ontario 4-H Reach
for the Top competition.
The competition was held Octo
ber 24 at Centralia College. Teams
from 12 counties participated in the
competition. Questions were bas
ed on 1987 4-H projects and
general knowledge. In an exciting
final game. Waterloo County beat
Elgin County 230 to 195. The
Waterloo team consisted of Eric
Schwindt, RR 1. Elmira; Mike
Shantz, RR 1, St. Agatha; Karen
Howling, RR 1. New Dundee; and
Lori Isreal, New Hamburg. An
enthusiastic teamfrom Temiskam-
ing also participated. After the
competition the Huron County4-H
Youth Council put on a dance for all
the competitors.
Margaret Cronyn receives the Bank of Montreal Award from CoUn
Parker of the Clinton branch at the Huron County 4H Awards Night at
Clinton Friday. Margaret, RR 2, Blyth, was the top first year swine
member in the county.
Two North Huron 4H Swine members received Bill Turnbull Awards at the 4H Awards Night in Clinton
Friday, Sandra Shelley [left], RR 2, Gorrie and Hazel Rae, RR 1, Wroxeter, received cash prizes for having
top marks showing Yorkshire pigs. Sandra took a number of awards including the C.S. McNaughton
Trophy for having highest 4H marks in the county.
