DOUG ZEHR BRUSSELS MENNONITE FELLOWSHIP It happens every day and it seems more than ever. Like the manwhosaid, “I don’t have time to be a father. My career doesn’t allow for it.” You have to feel sorry for the man. He was an individual who had invested eight years with a wife and two children, and now he was forsaking them for a career. I wonder if he will ever escape from Stress workshop coming up Nov. 13 He's coming back ... by popular demand! Dr. Richard Earle of the Canadian Institute of Stress will conduct another "Practical Stress Management" workshop on Thursday, November 26 at the Clinton Town Hall. Participants in former work shops facilitated by Dr. Earle in Huron County evaluated the day as being useful, practical, and inter esting. Dr. Earle’s sense of the pain of knowing that he abandoned and scarred the lives of three people. Stopping there does noteven begin to recognize the personal cost of such a decision. What could he have been thinking? Can a career embrace you after a long, tense day? Can a career give you tender memories like holding your own tiny baby in your arms? Or the joyful melody of fi'ERling children at the dinner table? A million thoughtful ges tures that say, ‘‘I love you”? humourand experience working in the stress field makes him a very entertaining speaker who provides practical information about effec tively coping with stress. You can learn how to manage the stress in your life by attending this "Practical Stress Management” workshop. Pre-registration is re quired before, November 13. Call the Huron County Health Unit at 524-8301. Oh, a career can give you a title, a few extra bucks, some social status or a meaningful occupation of time. But a career cannot substitute for greatfamily relationships, memor ies and daily acceptance. For many of us, our identities are so tied up with our jobs and careers that we miss some of the more simple beauties of life and daily living. And it seems ever more popular that individuals turn their backs on those they once loved. In one sense it is so easy to be glamorous. We can put on a good front or keep a spotless public image. Butwhenwegetintothe confines of our own homes, how do we respond to our spouse? When the front door is shut, how do we treat our children? For some, that is the time to be critical, to nag and to mistreat the ones we love. Our personal integrity is made suspect by huge skeletons in the family closet. Of course it seems popular to hear today about abuse, whether child or spouse. Fortunately the realities are being exposed and many victims of abuse are receiv ing much needed attention and opportunity to bring about some change. Beyond physical abuse, there is also emotional and psychological damage that can be done. The deliberate ignoring of feelings, put downs and insults create a lot of challenges for healthy self-image and self-esteem for spouses and children. Where self-confidence is destroyed, there will be a multitide of problems. JZachoneofusdoesa hundred and one things during the course of a week. Lookingbackafterraising his family, one father put it this way: "I know now that as oceans are made up of drops of water, so happy homes are made of many happy experiences. As mountains are made of many grains of sand, so relationships are made of small grains of goodness in daily life together. And as centuries have thteir years and years have their day, and days are built with hours and moments, it is when we invest the moments with small kindness es and loving words that the years bring forth a bountiful harvest of beauty and blessing.” For all occasions, big or small, we do them all!
