Phone 523-4250 2 services celebrate church anniversary The Londesboro Women’s Insti­ tute meeting was held October 14 at 8 p.m. in the hall opening with the Ode, O Canada and Mary Stewart Collect with Hattie Wood at the piano. Vice-president Marjorie Ander­ son opened the meeting with a reading "Wild Goose Fly”. Roll call was answered with something a blind person has difficulty doing, by 24 members with 3 visitors. Minutes of the last meeting and treasurers report by secretary­ treasurer Alice Buchanan. Two resolutions were read and approv­ ed with June Fothergill, delegate, to report at area meeting conven­ tion, Oct. 15-16 at St. Mary’s. Members were thanked for their help at fall Institute Rally in Londesboro, October 5. A letter of thanks is to be sent to Boyd Taylor At the United Church Anniver­ sary Services Sunday morning greeting guests was Melvin Knox; ushers were Ken Armstrong, Len Archambault, Don McGregor and Neil Salverda. A sing song was held before church, led by Jim Thompson with Deanna Lyon at the piano. Rev. Snihur welcomed all and gave the Call to Worship and announce­ ments. Flowers were in memory of Amy Bosman. A Good Will truck will be at the church Tuesday, October 27. A three-part study session “Creation on Crisis" will be held on the first three Fridays of November at 8 p.m. in Auburn United Church. All are invited from Londesboro and Auburn. The Senior youth group meets Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at the church. The anthems were by soloist Cheryl Cronin singing, "Bless this House" and "The King iscoming" accompanied on piano by Marsha Szusz. The children’s time song was "Hallelu, Hallelu". The story was Cindy, Sally and Muffle find the treasure. In a chest of old clothes in the bottom was an old Bible. Junior teachers were Chris­ tie Scott and Kelly Bosman. The sermon was: Looking to the past, living in the present, looking to the future. After the service a time of fellowship was held downstairs. At the evening service, prior to church service, music was provid­ ed by Gail Lear at the organ. Lisa Duizer on piano provided the music. Greeting were Jack and Helen Lee. Ushers were Ken Armstrong, Len Archambault, John Hoggarth and Don McGre­ gor. All were welcomed by Rev. Snihur who gave the announce­ ments. Rev. David Woodall was guest speaker. The scripture read­ ing was from James 4: "On Strife Against The Passion”. The anth­ em was sung by a joint choir of Londesboroand Ontario United Street Church, organist Gail Lear and trumpet played by Jeff Hearn of Clinton and Ann Coulter, Goderich. Director was Louise McGregor of Clinton. The sermon was "Receiving- Celebrating”, by Rev. David Woodall. A men’s trio ‘ ‘Love Lifted Me’’ was sung by Jerry Cox, Bob Mann and Fred Lobb with Louise McGregor at the piano. After church service a fellowship time downstairs was enjoyed. > People visit in Londesboro On Thanksgiving weekend John Cartwright was home from McGill University in Montreal where he is studying accounting. On Sunday Florence, John and Claude spent Thanksgiving with Keith. Mrs. Mary Blacker of Stratford visited on Thursday with Mrs. Hazel Watkins. Lome and Addie Hunking, Clara Riley and Ida Durnin visited on Friday with their cousin Susie (Sampson) Eckmier in Tavistock. June Fothergill, Alice Buchan­ an, Margaret Taylor and Lois Elliott attended the W.l. area convention Oct. 15-16 held in St. Marys. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Shaddick visited on Sunday with their daughter Lloy and Dirk Garlichs in Waterloo. Mr. and Mrs. Orval Newby visited on Thursday with Tom and Veda Van Galen at Waterford and on Sunday with son Don and Phyllis Newby at Innerkip. Remember Happy Gang Seniors meeting October 28at 1:30 p.m. in the hall. Rhonda Howatt named chief Explorer by Kerrie Szusz and Pam Salverda Members started their expedi­ tion by saying the purpose. Members had their election to see UCW unit plans for bazaar Seniors attend who would be chief, secretary, treasurer and reporter. Rhonda Howatt is chief; Kerrie Szusz, secretary; Erin Horbaniuk, treasurer; Pam Salverda, reporter. Afterthey had the election they went upstairs and decorated the church for Thanksgiving Sunday. They ended the expedition with Lynda Horbanuik talking about the next meeting. for donating apples and juice to this meeting. It was moved to give a donation of $10 to Blyth Legion. W.l. euchre parties are to begin November 6 at 8 p.m. It was moved to cater to the Happy Gang Srs. on November 25 noon Christmas meeting. Lois Elliott gave a report on the rally, October 5 in Londes­ boro. The craft table made $150. Guest speakers were Helen and BertSootheran, members of CNIB. Helen told of her youth. She worked in Hamilton in a pet shop where she met her husband Bert. She went to Oakville to see an eye doctor. Bert was born in Niagara Falls where he went to public school and fouryearsofhighschool, worked in a music shop tuning pianos. He still does some piano tuning. He’s thankful for good neighbours and friends. This is the month for canvassing for C.N.I.B. He then showed a number of conveniences they have and ex­ plained how they were used: Braille playing cards, a tape recorder, a watch with digits, scales that told your weight, checkers and a board,checkers different shapes. He was very interesting. They have one son Don. He was thanked by Dora Heard and presented with a gift. The meeting closed. Lunch was served by Lois Elliott, Doris Batkin, Dorah Heard and Helen Sootheran. NWof Blyth The October meeting of the Burns U.C.W. was held at the home of Jean Leiper with 15 members present. Hazel Reid opened the meeting with a reading * A Key’’. Hymns 577 and 252 followed. Thanksgiving readings were given by Joan Hoggarth and Bervl Reid. The scripture was taken from Matthew 7 verses 16-20. The topic "Christian Tests” was presented by Hazel Reid, Josephine Mac­ Gregor, Joan Hoggarth, Gloria McEwing and Beryl Reid. A reading ‘‘The definition of a Christian” by Hazel Reid. Hazel thanked Jean, and all who took part. Amelia Rice conducted the business. Roll call was answer­ ed with a Bible verse, and minutes of the last meeting were read. The treasurer’s report was given by Margaret Taylor. Plans were made for the Bazaar October 21. A thank you from Mae and George Smith was received for the donation made in memory of Marjorie Bickell. Beryl Reid thank­ ed the U.C.W. for the card sent to Danny. Clara Riley invited all to her home in December for the Christ­ mas meeting. It was decided that we leave the cost of the Christmas exchange gift at $3, and members put their name in with their gift. The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Lunch was served. fall rally Happy Gang members attended the 13th Fall Rally of Zone 8 in Holmesville on Oct. 14. Bob and Audrey Thompson, Lome Hunk­ ing, Russell and Margaret Good, Estelle Adams, Beth Knox, Dora Shobbrook, Laura Lyon, Edythe Beacom, Mary Longman attended. Guest speaker was Miss Bev Brown, co-ordinator for programs of ‘‘Town and Country Home­ makers.” Some games were play­ ed and lunch was served. THE SMART MONEY IS GETTING SWITCH TO WHERE MORE INTEREST -------------- 4-H club holds meeting The fourth meeting of Londes­ boro 4H Club was held at Sandra Mayberry’s home. All members repeated the 4H pledge and business and roll call were discussed. The night’s topic was on apples; along with their characteristics and favourite uses. Also discussed were other fruits with members learning about selection, storage, and nutritive values. While two members pre­ pared the recipe of Strawberry Rhubard Punch, all members were reminded of speeches to be made next meeting and of steps on how to present them.
