Block Parents starts in Brussels Continued from page 1 and added that the executive will likely approach one or more of the local service clubs about purchas ing and erecting Block Parent signs at all four entrances to the village. A public meeting held at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Com munity Centre on October 7 attracted more than 30 interested persons, with 21 of those present signing up as volunteers the same evening. Mrs. Crawford said that volunteer applications have been sent home with all elementary school children, and a number of these have already been returned. She adds that applications may still be picked up at the Brussels’ municipal office, and that forms should be returned there as soon as they are completed. Block Parents are responsible for displaying the group’s symbol in a prominent position in their homes, and are expected to keep an eye on the streets in their vicinity while they are “on du ty”. How ever, Mrs. Crawford said that the sign should be taken down at any time the volunteer is not at home, or if they just don’t want to be involved at any given time. She said that volunteers do not need to be parents, but just interested individuals. In a program sponsored by the Ontario Provincial Police, school childrenare taughtthat the symbol ona home means that they can go to that home to find safety at any time the need should arise. The symbol also means that senior citizens or anyone else in trouble may also seek help at a Block Parents home. The Brussels group had hoped to have the program in place by this Halloween, but Mrs. Crawford said that this now seems unlikely, because of the late start which had been made. Every volunteer appli cant must be screened by the OPP before being given approval to act as a Block Parent, Mrs. Crawford said, and this takes a little time. Constable John Marshall of the Goderich Detachment of the OPP will be at Brussels Public School on November 23 to show safety films to the students and to inform them of the new program for their safety in their village. National Block Parent Week is November 19 - 25 BRUSSELS CEMETERY NOTICE Re: PermanentCareon Old Plots The Management is trying to improve the appearance of the cemetery. Financing is difficult. To cut the grass once costs $300.00. The old plots present a problem. Permanent care was not paid and annual care has ceased to be paid. Yet these plots must be maintained. On many of these plots the yearly care was paid until the 1940-1960 period. It would seem when that generation passed on, that the present generation is unaware of the obligation. In an effort to derive some revenue from these plots, the board proposes to contact descendants or relatives of the plot owners, hoping they will pay the permanent care, which for a five grave burial plot is $100.00. Only one notice per plot will be sent. Where possible, it is hoped that person will contact other descendants in order to share the expense. All proceeds received will be invested and the interest generated will help maintain the plots. $100.00 invested at 10% will provide $10.00 per year for cutting the grass, levelling, etc. Please take note that any notices sent are not demands, merely requests, which we hope will meet with approval.
