The Lucan Irish were in town for the season opener and it looked like a walk-away when they scored the first goal just 48 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. It was almost the mid-way point of the first period when three returning members of last year’s team finally combined to beat the visiting goalie. Defenceman Kevin Lee stepped up to beat the goalie on a pass from Kevin McArter and Bill Haines on a power play effort. At 9:05 just two minutes later, newcomers Greg Crummer scored from Ron Strome to put Brussels in the lead. Within 28 seconds Ron Strome scored his first goal from defenceman Kevin Lee to give the Bulls a 3-1 lead. Lucan narrowed the margin by one when they scored with 8:04 remaining. The remainder of the period was scoreless. Lucan scored the first goal of the period once more after just three minutes of play. There was 15:06 left in the period when defenceman Paul Robinson scored for the Bulls from Tim Fritz and Bill Haines. The second period of play belonged to the Bulls as they dominated the scoring. Bob Mc Millan and Mike Chapman com bined to score Brussels’ second goal of the period at the 4:18 mark, then with just 53 seconds left in the period Chet Hymers scored from Mike Chapman and Kevin Lee to end the second period with a 6-3 lead for Brussels. The third period was scoreless as both goalies defended their posts well. Itwas not the brand of hockey that we are to witness as spectators but it couldn’t all be blamed on the 12 hockey players on the ice. The coaches no doubt stress improve ment on their players, in their ability to play the game. Somehow it should be impressed upon the other members on the ice, that improvement in their occupation from year to year is expected also. The Bullswill have a hectic week of hockey as they play away in Mitchell on Tuesday night. Friday night, they will be at home to Lambeth for an 8 p.m. start. Saturday night will have the team travelling to Exeter for an 8:30 start. Tuesday, Oct. 20 will have the Thamesford Trojans in Brussels for an 8 o’clock game. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1987. PAGE 13 During the Brussels Bulls first hockey game of the season at home last Sunday, Club president Joe Steffler [left] and vice-president Roy Gingerich [right] presented a cheque for $500 to Jim Garniss, Superintendent of Branch 901, Brussels, of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade. The donation is to express the Bulls appreciation of the work the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade does for them, being in attendance at every Bulls game, either at home or away.
