Phone 887-9487 People visit in Belgrave for Thanksgiving Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wightman were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Don Metcalfe and family Hanover. Belgrave WMS celebrate 100 of The Women’s Missionary Socie­ ty held its 100th Anniversary Monday, October 5 in Knox Presbyterian Church, Belgrave. Mrs. Margaret Dunbar opened with a call to worship and welcomed the guests. A hymn was sung and the soloist Mrs. Marion Mundell of Gorrie sang an old favourite, “I think when I read that Sweet Story of Old.” Scripture was read by Mrs. Ivy Cloakey. Mrs. Margaret Siertsema read a meditation on missions to foreign lands, Mrs. Robena Mc- Burney led in prayer and the soloist sang “Amazing Love.” Mrs. Hazel Dalrymple introduc­ ed the guest speaker Mrs. Made­ line Edwards of Goderich, who gave an inspiring talk on some history of the W. M. S. as it made its beginning 100 years ago and also on the 1987 Congress held in Winnipeg which was on the theme “Saying Yes to Christ today.” Mrs. Garner Nicholson gave a brief history of the early church life in Belgrave and the beginning of the Ladies Missionary Group which was started by the Mini­ ster ’ s wife Mrs. Leask of St. Helens 100 years ago. Mrs. Nicholson named some of the Charter members and dedicated the flow­ ers on the table to their memory, followed by a moment of silence. Mrs. Lottie Scott and Mrs. Freda Scott received the collection which was dedicated by Mrs. Dunbar. Mrs. Nicholson thanked the speak­ er, soloist and all who helped with the service. A hymn was sung and Mrs. Victor Jamieson closed with pray­ er. Lunch was served in the W.I. Hall and a decorated cake was cut by Mrs. Dunbar and Mrs. Agnes Youngblut two of the dedicated members. Rev. Jamieson said grace and lunch was served by the ladies. Guests were presentfrom Wing­ ham, Whitechurch, Bluevale, the Afternoon Unit of Belgrave U.C.W. and the Anglican Church ladies. Mrs. James Wightman was the first President, Mrs. G. Law was secretary and Mrs. William Cae­ sar, treasurer. Misses Mary, Elizabeth and Grace Irvine were missionaries in China, leaving from Knox Presbyterian Church in Belgrave. Barbara Coultes of Toronto spent Thanksgiving weekend with her mother Mrs. Janisa Coultes. Donald Walker of Exeter visited on Sunday with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Shaw, Mr. and Mrs. Geoff Viglianti and Stephanie, London were Thanks­ giving visitors with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Shaw. Mrs. William Schreiber and daughter Kathy of Milton and Mrs. Dorothy Pelfer of Weston spent a few days with Mrs. Sarah Ander­ son this past week. Friends and neighbours of this community extend sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Procter in the loss of her mother Mrs. Agnes Coulthart who passed away recent­ ly at Paisley, Scotland. Jamie Piluke, left, and Wayne Jerome of the Fourth Line of Morris Township dig in at the 39th Annual Belgrave Community Centre Turkey Supper, held October 7 in the community centre. The event was once again a huge success, as close to 1,000people sat down together to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner which had been prepared and delivered by a host of committees from up and down the concession of Morris and East Wawanosh Townships. The event raised over $4,000 which will be used towards the operational costs of the Belgrave arena and to sponsor minor sports programs throughout the year.
