Sikkema the first minister of the church, greeted each other before taking part in the church’s 25th anniversary service Sunday morning. The service was the highlight of a weekend of activities to celebrate the anniversary. Blyth Thankoffering hears about Philippines The annual fall Thankoffering service of Blyth U .C. W. was held in the church sanctuary on the evening of Oct. 4 with the largest crowd ever to gather for such a service, the President estimated. It consisted of large numbers of United Church Women from Buras, Belgrave, Calvin Brick, Brussels and Walton. Also present were Blyth church men, organist, Margaret Kai, the Teen Club and the Bell Ringers from St. Andrews Presbyterian church in Wingham. The Bell Ringers consisted of eight young gentlemen and their conductor Gordon Leggat who, with his baton and charts on which the eyes of all eight performers were riveted, did a magnificent job producing from his boys perfect harmony in the three hymns played in each of their three appearances. A unique event and much appreciated was the presentation of colourful slides of his native land, the Philippines, by the Blyth minister, Rev. Lorenzo Ramirez. Rev. Lorenzo felt right at home showing pictures of his home and its surrounding where he grew up and also that of his in-laws. His audience, too, were made to feel right at home as many aspects of the economic, social, church, agricultural and horticultural life in the Philippines unfolded by means of the pictures and the folksy style of Lorenzo’s com ments. Rev. Ramirez reinforced the fact that abject poverty exists in the Philippines where only 20 per cent of the land is farmed by owners, all the rest by tenants who have little change of ever getting ahead. The opening of the service, a meditation by President Susan Howson, was filled with praise and thanksgiving thoughts for God’s goodness and the closing remarks by the Blyth minister stressed that Canadians should feel constantly blessed for being able to live in a land of plenty. God is good to us in so many ways, he said. Fellowship continued after the service in the church’s lower hall where refreshments were served by the Sunshine Unit.
