Sports Veterans give Bulls high hopes for 87-88 The Brussels Jr. D. Bulls, coming off the most successful season of their four-year history, open the 1987-88 schedule at home this Sunday at 2 p.m. against Lucan. Last season Brussels won the Western Jr. D. North Division title and forced the eventual All-Ontar- io Champion Lucan Irish to six games before being eliminated. This season the Bulls will again play in the northern loop against teams from Clinton, Exeter, Mit­ chell, Seaforth and a new entry from Wellesley. The playoff win­ ner of this division advances directly to the All-Ontario finals. As well a home and home series will be played against teams from the south division which includes Thedford, Thamesford, Mount Brydges, Lucan, Lambeth and Belmont. Earlier this summer the juniors named their incoming executive as follows: Past President, Brian Huether; President, Joe Steffler; First-Vice-President, Jack Vader; Second Vice-President, Roy Ging­ rich; Treasurer, Diane Huether; Secretary, Marlene Rutledge; Dir­ ectors, Max Demaray, Jim Fritz, Brian Rutledge, and Hugh Nichol. The new executives first order of business was to name Frank Stretton as manager and Paul Steep and Steve Coulter as coach­ es. Pete Exel returns as equipment manager and trainer “extraordi­ naire” for his fifth consecutive year. The Brussels Bulls will open the 1987-88 hockey season at home next Sunday at 2 p.m. against the defending All Ontario Champion Lucan Irish. After three weeks of training camp and exhibition games the team has been selected and the players are ready to defend the North Division Western Jr. “D” championship. This year’s team has many veterans returning which will hopefully allow the team to get off to a quick start. The defence has five players returning - Paul Edwards, Bill Haines, Kevin Lee, Paul Robinson and Doug Taylor. Thenewfaceontheblueline will be Stuart Bowman, a standout with the Milverton Juveniles for the past three years. Up front the Bulls should be strong with the return of Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter who finished one-two in the team scoring last year. Other returning forwards include Brian Campbell, Mike Chapman, Kevin Johnston, Ron Chambers, Murray Houghton and Mike Vincent. The new faces on forward include Greg Crummer who played for the Listowel Jr. B. Cyclones last year, Chet Hymers from the Listowel Midgets, Ron Strome from the Belmore Midgets, Jeff Pilkington from the Palmer­ ston Juveniles and Tim Dillow a former Brussels resident who played for the Stratford Major Busy season ahead for Brussels Bulls 1987-88 BRUSSELS BULLS JRD. This year’s coaches Steve Coul­ ter and Paul Steep are optimistic that the team will have another good year. If the exhibition games are any indication the local fans are in for another exciting year of hockey. In theexhibitiongames the Bulls finished with a record of twowinsandaloss.ln their first exhibition game theBullsbuiltup a 7-4 lead over Thedford but had to withstand a late flurry to win 7 - 6. In the second game Brussels played a strong third period to break at 2-2 tie and defeat Lucan 5-2. In their final exhibition game the Bulls roared back from a 4-2 deficit against Tavistock to go ahead 5-4 only to lose the game 6-5 when Tavistock scored two goals late in the third period. The Bullswill be practising in Brussels this Friday and Saturday in preparation for their home opener on Sunday. The coaching staff is looking to make two or three additions to the club in the next week or two and then get down to teaching the players the systems they will be using throughout the year. The team is looking forward to supplying entertaining hockey for the fans this year. So let’s get out and support our Bulls next Sunday at 2 p.m. against Lucan. CHSS boys win V-Ball crown Central Huron’s Senior Volley­ ball team took part in the annual Madill Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26. Undermanned due to the ab­ sence of several regular players due to work and captain Ron McKay due to a very unfortunate broken ankle suffered in practice, the Senior Redmen turned in an excellent effort all day. The Senior Redmen opened the tournament with a very fine effort against the host Mustang team, winning the game 15-13. The Redmen continu­ ed their winning ways downing Mt. Forest 15-9 and Walkerton 15-5. O.S.C.V.l. of Owen Sound fell to the Redmen by a 15-7 score. C.H. S. S. suffered their first loss against South Huron by a 15-13 score. The Redmen bounced back downing a very good Mitchell team by a 15-7 score. The Senior Redmen completed the round robin effort by downing the Seaforth team by a 15-0 score. The Redmen qualified in first place for the semifinals. Against Mt. Forest in the semi-final, the Redmen produced a steady effort and won both games by scores of 15-9 and 15-10. In the finals against the host Madill team, the Senior Redmen won the first game by a very close score of 15-12 but dropped the second game by the same 15-12 score. In the final game, the Senior Redmen played with a lot of poise and came away with a 15-8 victory to take the tournament champion­ ship foi the first time. Special mention must be made to the outstanding play of Geoff Lyon, Jeff Roy and Jeff Brown ably Local athletes score at CHSS track meet On Friday, Sept. 25 the Annual Gr. 9 Track and Field Meet was held at Central Huron in connec­ tion with Student Week for the Gr. 9’s. Each competitor competed in 6 events during the day. The top finishers were: Girls High Jump-first, LisaKennedy, l. 38 m.; second, Kerri Cox, 1.35 m. ; third, Angela McCool, 1.35 m. Mabel's Grill Continued from page 4 gets the weather out west in Alberta they always seem to have beautiful summery temperatures. So she feels good and figures a couple of days later we’ll have nice weather. But it never gets here. Tim says it’s probably just a local phenomenon. People in Alberta talk so much about all the injustices they get from the government in Ottawa and the rich cats in Ontario that they create their own mini- climate.
