Veterans give Bulls
high hopes for 87-88
The Brussels Jr. D. Bulls,
coming off the most successful
season of their four-year history,
open the 1987-88 schedule at home
this Sunday at 2 p.m. against
Lucan.
Last season Brussels won the
Western Jr. D. North Division title
and forced the eventual All-Ontar-
io Champion Lucan Irish to six
games before being eliminated.
This season the Bulls will again
play in the northern loop against
teams from Clinton, Exeter, Mit
chell, Seaforth and a new entry
from Wellesley. The playoff win
ner of this division advances
directly to the All-Ontario finals.
As well a home and home series
will be played against teams from
the south division which includes
Thedford, Thamesford, Mount
Brydges, Lucan, Lambeth and
Belmont.
Earlier this summer the juniors
named their incoming executive as
follows: Past President, Brian
Huether; President, Joe Steffler;
First-Vice-President, Jack Vader;
Second Vice-President, Roy Ging
rich; Treasurer, Diane Huether;
Secretary, Marlene Rutledge; Dir
ectors, Max Demaray, Jim Fritz,
Brian Rutledge, and Hugh Nichol.
The new executives first order of
business was to name Frank
Stretton as manager and Paul
Steep and Steve Coulter as coach
es. Pete Exel returns as equipment
manager and trainer “extraordi
naire” for his fifth consecutive
year.
The Brussels Bulls will open the
1987-88 hockey season at home
next Sunday at 2 p.m. against the
defending All Ontario Champion
Lucan Irish. After three weeks of
training camp and exhibition
games the team has been selected
and the players are ready to defend
the North Division Western Jr.
“D” championship.
This year’s team has many
veterans returning which will
hopefully allow the team to get off
to a quick start. The defence has
five players returning - Paul
Edwards, Bill Haines, Kevin Lee,
Paul Robinson and Doug Taylor.
Thenewfaceontheblueline will be
Stuart Bowman, a standout with
the Milverton Juveniles for the
past three years. Up front the Bulls
should be strong with the return of
Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter who
finished one-two in the team
scoring last year. Other returning
forwards include Brian Campbell,
Mike Chapman, Kevin Johnston,
Ron Chambers, Murray Houghton
and Mike Vincent. The new faces
on forward include Greg Crummer
who played for the Listowel Jr. B.
Cyclones last year, Chet Hymers
from the Listowel Midgets, Ron
Strome from the Belmore Midgets,
Jeff Pilkington from the Palmer
ston Juveniles and Tim Dillow a
former Brussels resident who
played for the Stratford Major

Bantams lastyear. Ingoal the Bulls
have Jeff McGavin, last year’s
league leading goalie returning.
This year’s coaches Steve Coul
ter and Paul Steep are optimistic
that the team will have another
good year. If the exhibition games
are any indication the local fans are
in for another exciting year of
hockey. In theexhibitiongames
the Bulls finished with a record of
twowinsandaloss.ln their first
exhibition game theBullsbuiltup a
7-4 lead over Thedford but had to
withstand a late flurry to win 7 - 6.
In the second game Brussels
played a strong third period to
break at 2-2 tie and defeat Lucan
5-2. In their final exhibition game
the Bulls roared back from a 4-2
deficit against Tavistock to go
ahead 5-4 only to lose the game 6-5
when Tavistock scored two goals
late in the third period.
The Bullswill be practising in
Brussels this Friday and Saturday
in preparation for their home
opener on Sunday. The coaching
staff is looking to make two or three
additions to the club in the next
week or two and then get down to
teaching the players the systems
they will be using throughout the
year. The team is looking forward
to supplying entertaining hockey
for the fans this year. So let’s get
out and support our Bulls next
Sunday at 2 p.m. against Lucan.
CHSS boys win V-Ball crown
Central Huron’s Senior Volley
ball team took part in the annual
Madill Invitational Tournament on
Saturday, Sept. 26.
Undermanned due to the ab
sence of several regular players
due to work and captain Ron
McKay due to a very unfortunate
broken ankle suffered in practice,
the Senior Redmen turned in an
excellent effort all day. The Senior
Redmen opened the tournament
with a very fine effort against the
host Mustang team, winning the
game 15-13. The Redmen continu
ed their winning ways downing Mt.
Forest 15-9 and Walkerton 15-5.
O.S.C.V.l. of Owen Sound fell to
the Redmen by a 15-7 score.
C.H. S. S. suffered their first loss
against South Huron by a 15-13
score. The Redmen bounced back
downing a very good Mitchell team
by a 15-7 score. The Senior
Redmen completed the round
robin effort by downing the
Seaforth team by a 15-0 score. The
Redmen qualified in first place for
the semifinals. Against Mt. Forest
in the semi-final, the Redmen
produced a steady effort and won
both games by scores of 15-9 and
15-10. In the finals against the host
Madill team, the Senior Redmen
won the first game by a very close
score of 15-12 but dropped the
second game by the same 15-12
score.
In the final game, the Senior
Redmen played with a lot of poise
and came away with a 15-8 victory
to take the tournament champion
ship foi the first time. Special
mention must be made to the
outstanding play of Geoff Lyon,
Jeff Roy and Jeff Brown ably

beautiful summery temperatures.
So she feels good and figures a

Tim says it’s probably just a local
phenomenon. People in Alberta
talk so much about all the injustices
they get from the government in
Ottawa and the rich cats in Ontario
that they create their own mini-
climate.
