Phone 8B7-6677 Walton Bantam girls win Tri-county crown The Walton Bantam Giris cap­ tured the “A” Tri-championship Thursday night at the Walton park, defeating the Wingham Bantam Girls by 5-4. The game was the Craig Hackwell wins many awards Craig Hackwell was the recipi­ ent of the following awards at the Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton commencement, Septem­ ber 25: Haugh Tire Award, (Auto Mechanics Practical), Grade 12 Technical Teachers Award and Scholars Award Cover 80 per cent. Craig is presently attending Fan­ shawe College in the Construction Engineering Technician Program. Craig is the son of Merton and Doreen Hackwell, RR 4, Walton. Duff's church holds reunion Worldwide Communion was held at Duff’s United Church Sunday morning with Graeme Craig, Ken McDonald, Mary Humphries, Bill Courts and Lavern Godkin serving. Glenda Carter was organist and offering was received by Jack McEwing, Lavern Godkin and Bill Courts. Rev. Bonnie Lamble was in the pulpit and lead the junior choir in their anthem. Local people return home Mr. and Mrs. Roily Achilles returned home from a two-week motor trip where they visited with Della Achilles at Hearst. She returned home with them along with Roily’s sister Mary Haight of Kenora. Mrs. Isabelle Shortreed and Mrs. Leona Connelly returned home Saturday night from a three-day colour tour to the Bancroft area, enjoying a three hour boat cruise on Stoney Lake, returning home through Peter­ borough viewing the lift-locks on the Trent-Severn Waterways and then the Cullen Barns near Scar­ borough. Warden honoured A capacity crowd lined the Belmore Community Centre Sept. 25 to pay tribute to Huron County Warden Brian McBurney at an appreciation night held in his honor. Mr. McBurney, who is reeve of Turnberry Township, will com­ plete his term as warden this December. He is the first Turn­ berry reeve to sit in the warden’s chair since 1956. Turnberry Deputy Reeve Doug Fortune was master of ceremonies for the evening. He said the large crowd was indicative of the respect Mr. McBurney commands not only in his own township, but in the entire county. Mr. Fortune com­ mended Mr. McBurney for his constant attention to Turnberry Township, particularly in light of his commitments at the county level. In his address, Mr. McBur­ ney thanked members of his own council, the citizens of Turnberry and his colleagues at county council, many of whom were in attendance. third in the best of three series. Walton got off to a good start in the series, winning the first game bya score of 6-5. Wingham won the second game, quite easily beating Walton 18-3. The Walton girls played 25 games over the summer, losing seven. The girls also won in a tournament in Listowel during the summer. Congratulations to the following girls on a great season: Peggy Ryan, Cathy Williamson, Nancy Godkin, Dianne Williamson, Hea­ ther Perrie, Elizabeth Lamble, Sherry Hoegy, Sherry Harburn, Glenda Carter, Bonnie Finlayson, Heather McGavin and Jenny Culliton. Coaches were Karen Hoegy and Cheryl Ryan. Long-time Ethel postmaster Lothar Weber, left, was honoured on the occasion of his retirement last Friday with the presentation of a certificate from Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, in recognition of his 23 years of service to Canada Post. Gail Daer, centre, Supervisory Postmaster from the Palmerston office and former postmaster at Blyth, made the presentation, while incoming postmaster Dorreen Suter looks on.
