Jean Evans and Kendra Krauter with the help of several Ethel ladies prepared a light lunch for those attending. Kendra presented a lamp and wall clock to Lothar, Jean and son Philip. Philip read the verse of the card and Jean thanked everyone forcomingand said there had been ups and downs over the years but because of the wonderful people in Ethel it was mostly ups. They were cheered with “ For they are jolly good fellows” Doreen Sutter has taken posses sion of the store and is calling it the Ethel General Store. Almost the entire population of Ethel turned out last Sunday to bid farewell to Jean and Lothar Weber, seated above, with their son, Phillip, as the proprietors of Weber’s General Store in the hamlet for the past 24 years prepared to retire at the end of this week. Neighbours and friends Kendra Krauter and Jean Evans, standing, presented the couple with gifts on behalf of the community. Big turnout for farewell party Practically every man. woman and child from the hamlet of Ethel and the surrounding countryside turned out Sunday to bid farewell to Jean and Lothar Weber, and to wish them well in their new life. The Webers are retiring after serving the community as the proprietors of Weber’s General Store for ‘‘23 years and nine months,” according to Mr. Weber, and will be leaving this weekend to take up a new and more leisurely life in Rodney, near Chatham, close to the peaceful shores of Lake Erie. The tribute paid to the Webers at the Grey Central Public School Sunday afternoon was indicitive of how much the couple will be missed by their friends and neighbours, although the store which had undergone major reno vations both inside and out over the years has been sold to a new owner, and will be left in capable hands. The highlight of the afternoon get-together was the presentation of a beautiful clock and a brass reading lamp to the Webers, made by friends Jean Evans and Kendra Krauter on behalf of the entire community, while the assembled crowd sang ‘ ‘For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” The Webers’ only son, Phillip, took time out from his around-the-worldtravels, after graduating from McGill University last May, to help his parents in the move and to attend their going- away party. In thanking her friends for the gifts, Mrs. Weber said: ‘ ‘There have been ups and downs in our life in Ethel, but thanks to all you wonderful people, they have most ly been ‘ups’.” Doreen Suter, formerly ot Kit chener, takes over the proprietor ship of Weber’s General Store this Saturday, although she has been in Ethel for the past month ‘ learning the ropes” from the Webers, she says. Ms. Suter will also take over the job of postmistress, continuing in the position which the Webers have filled for nearly a quarter of a century. However, she says that Canada Post has indicated that her position is merely an interim one, and said that it will consider her permanent appointment some time in the months ahead.
