Blyth Legion Auxiliary plans open house Wednesday The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 420, Blyth, and its Ladies’ Auxiliary, are hosting an Open House today (Wednesday) to commemorate Legion Week, which is being celebrated across Canada September 13-19. The Legion building on Dinsley street will be open to the public from2p.m.to4p.m.,andagain from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and members of both the Legion and the Auxiliary <vill be on hand to greet visitors, who are welcome to attend to play a game of cards, or just to enjoy a social visit. The Blyth Branch 420 of the Royal Canadian Legion was char­ tered in May 1940, with C. D. Kilpatrick as its first president. The purpose of the Legion is to act as advocate for and assist the veterans of WW 1 and WW 11, and rheir families. Branch activities over the years have included supporting charit­ able foundations, contributions to local groups, youth education, public speaking, the Video Identi­ fication Programme for children, minor sports and bursaries to students whose parents are mem­ bers of the Legion. Membership to the Legion includes veterans of both wartime and regular forces, their spouses, sons and daughters. There are 142 members at the present time in the Blyth Branch. The present Officers for Branch 420 are: president. Bill Vincent; first vice-president, John Battye; second vice-president Lome Snell; secretary. Penny Overboe; trea­ surer, Donna Govier; sergeant- at-arms, Ralph McCrea; service officer and legion seniors, Clare Vincent; sports officer. Art Air­ drie. Members of the Executive com­ mittee are Joe Chatterton, Shirley Bell, Murray Adams, Art Airdrie, Mary Lou Stewart. Dave Overboe, Alan Caldwell and Past President Tim Chalmers. Life members in the Blyth Branch are Clare Vincent and Tom Thompson. The Blyth Legion Ladies Auxi- liary to Branch 420 was organized in 1947, and received its charter in January 1948, with Anna Draper as the first president. The Auxiliary today is still very active with fund raising activities such as the sale of quilts, card parties, the annual Penny Sale and catering, providing its major income. The money raised by such events goes back in to the comm unity in the form of donations and contribu­ tions to local groups and charities. A special project this year was the purchase of handicapped lift for the Blyth and District Community Centre. The Auxiliary supports the Branch and donates yearly to the bursary of the Provincial com­ mand. Present officers of the Ladies Auxiliary are president, Janis Henry; secretary, Mildred Ament; treasurer, Florence Quinn; first vice-president, Ruby Pattison; se­ cond vice-president, Brenda Fin­ layson; sergeant-at-arms, Sheron Stadelmann; flag bearer, Helen Lapp; sports officer, Kay Hessel- wood. Theexecutive committee consists of Edythe Giousher, Ver­ na Hesselwood and Past President Bernice Pierce. The Auxiliary has a present membership of 58. Life members to the Ladies Auxiliary are Luella McGowan, Mae Badley and Luella Hall. School rental increases for 1987-88 Community groups using Huron County school facilities will pay a fee of $15.60 per hour this year, up from $14.80 in 1986-87. The county Board of Education agreed to thenewfeeatthe first meeting of school trustees this school year, held in Clinton on September 8. Director of Education Bob Allen said that it has been customary for the Board to revise the rate each year for the use of school facilities where custodial services are re­ quired. The annual revisions are computed on the basis of average overtime rates from current collec­ tive agreements with custodians.
