Trustees gave approval for the move at the Board meeting in Clinton, September 8. Initiated in the spring of 1986 by Bob Allen, county Director of Education, the study has received input from several teachers’ federations and from members of both the county’s elementary and secondary principals’ and vice principals’ associations. It now goes before a committee of one- third of the county’s trustees, underthechairmanship of Joan Van Den Broek, trustee for Col- borne and Goderich Townships, which may in turn refer certain recommendations to other Board committees for study. Members of the Director’s Study Committee dealt with such issues as elementary school codes of behaviour, guidelines for teachers in matters of physical contact with students, disciplinary internven tions such as suspensions and corporal punishment, and contacts with agencies outside the school system. ‘‘Our role is to determine what is appropriate in student/teacher relationships in 1987,” Mr. Allen said, noting that many people today seem to view the school as a “cure-all” for all social disease. Mr. Allen said that no time line had been established for a final report on the study from the Education Committee, but said that its recommendations will eventually come before the entire board for consideration. John Elliott, trustee for Blyth, Morris and East Wawanosh, said that the awards presented had acknowledged many of the same students as received the top commencement awards each year, which he felt was not the original purpose of the ceremony. Director of Education Bob Allen agreed that the original thrust of the banquet had indeed been to honour individuals who would not normally be recognized by the education system, saying that the matter is currently being discussed with the OSSTF. However, he later told The Citizen that already the Excellence in Education banquet had become a way of acknowledging the very best students, teachers and com munity members within the coun ty, “the creme de la creme,” and that this would be virtually impos sible to change now to recognize what he called “also rans.” Nominations for the 1986 and 1987 awards were made by the teaching staff at each of the county’s five high schools, with the final decisions made by a county committee consisting of teachers from each school. At the School Board meeting in Clinton on September 8, Mr. Alien said that he had suggested two new awards be made on an annual basis, one each for the trustee and the administrator, at the Board level, past or present, who had made a significant contribution to education in Huron County. Nomi nations for these would come from the Board. The first of these new awards will be presented at the banquet next May.
