Blyth arena manager hired
A 57-year-old Wingham man
has been hired as the manager of
the Blyth and District Community
Centre. Councillor Bill Howson
told Blyth village council Tuesday
night, Sept. 8.
Mr. Howson said the decision
had been made at a meeting of the
hiring committee of the arena
board which was held prior to the
council meeting. 1 he new manager
is Robert Stuart who is expected to
commence work September 21. Ice
making is scheduled to begin Sept.

Councillor Howson said Mr.
Stewart has worked at the Wing
ham arena and comes very highly
recommended. Mr. Stuart has

Park plans discussed
Work could begin as early as this
fall on a major renovation project
for the Radford ball diamond at the
south end of the Blyth fair grounds,
a group of representatives of the
Blyth Slo-Pitch league told village
council Sept. 8.
Ken Siertsema, spokesman for
the group told council the schedul
ing of work to be done on the park
will depend on the availability of
financing and whether or not a
good to spend a lot of money on the
ball diamond only to have heavy
equipment run over the turf each
fall.
Reeve Wasson promised the
group the village would look into
the grant situation and report back
as soon as possible. Later council
lors felt it might be better to wait
until next year to get the work
underway anyway, considering the
short length of time left this fall.
arena ready for the Thresher
Reunion, he said, and the arena
committee was very impressed. He
will earn $21,000 a year and be in
charge of all operations in the
building.
Despiterumoursthat up to 25
applications for the position had
been received. Councillor Howson
said there were actually 11 receiv
ed from people as far as 60 miles
away. Many of those who had
applied were experienced people,
he said.
The councillor said he expected
there would be some criticism in
the community for hiring someone
from outside the community for the
job but the committee felt that
some new ideas and new blood
needed to be injected into the
operation of the facility.
Meanwhile, he said, a cleaning
service had been called in to try to
catch up on some of the backlog of
cleaning required in the building.

grant is available. He said the
group now has $11,443 in a bank
account and in consultation with
council will decide whether work
should begin this fall or the money
should be invested to earn money
until the project can be undertaken
next year.
The plans call for landscaping of
the ball diamond and the installa
tion of a fence and lights. Jim
Button of the group said the
estimate obtained last year put the
price tag at $30,000. The planning
calls for the lights from the
“arena” diamond to be transferr
ed to the Radford diamond and new
lights to be installed at the arena
diamond.
Mr. Siertsema said the group
hopes the village might budget
something toward the work and
with a grant, all the work could be
completed next year. It would
mean, he said, that nearly all the
games in the slo-pitch league could
be played in Blyth because of the
extra hours available through the
use of lights on two diamonds. Mr.
Button said it would also help
minor ball teams by providing
more available diamond time.
Reeve Albert Wasson said he
didn ’ t know what grants the village
might be able to apply for and so it
was difficult to give the delegation
a quick answer so that work could
begin this fall. He suggested
council would have to investigate
the grant situation and get back to
the ball players as quickly as
possible. He recommended the
group should consult with the
Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hob
by Association before installing a
permanent fence in case this
interferes with the running of the
Thresher Reunion.
Councillor Howson said that
perhaps some sort of portable
fence could be used but on the
rice!
