Today, the mixed grain that the Leipers grow is cut and tied into sheaves by the old binder the family has used for years, then stooked and left in the field to dry, turned once to dry the bottoms of the heavy sheaves. Tom used horses to draw it in from the field up until the 1950’s, but today a conventional tractor does the job, moving slowly along the windrows while a four man crew, two pitching and two stacking, build the load. Back at the barn, the 1922 Goodison separator, only the second separator the family has ever owned, is still powered by the 1949 Oliver tractor which the Leipers purchased new as a modern replacement for the older gas-powered tractor they had used since 1939 when they retired their original White Steam Traction Engine, which was sold to power a sawmill in Northern Ontario. Both Tom and Bill take turns on the separator, while Tom does most of the work in the straw mow, which he says is the dirtiest place a man can find to work. “You’ve got tokeepyourcollar buttoned up, especially if you’re blowing barley straw,’’ he says. Neighbours take turns pitching sheaves onto the belt, while others come to stand and watch at the scene which is becoming more and more rare in most parts of the land B0BJAMIES0N-0WNER&OPERATOR 357-2599 STARDUST AVIATION INC. Both Tom and Bill evade the question when asked if they will keep on threshing in this way, and every year there are rumours that this will be the last season that will recall the good old days on the Londesboro farm. But don’t bet on it. As long as Tom and Bill remain hale and hearty; as long as their sisters, Jean at home and Agnes up from Toronto, are there to provide the hearty meals that the crew needs; and as long as parts can be found for the old separator and neigh bours are around and eager to help out; come August, the old Goodi son will be fired up for one more season, and time will again stand still for a few more golden days.
