1 he case aroused a storm of
controversy after the Society
claimed that Mr. Van Ankum had
failed to provide adequate care for
the 10-year-old animal that had
been a family pet. More than 30
people across Ontario offered to
adopt the mule, and a storm of
protest sprang up from individuals
and farm groups who leapt to the
defense of Mr. Van Ankum,
reiterating his reputation as a
model farmer and an excellent
caretaker of his award-winning
herd of cattle.
At the request of his lawyer, the
case of Ernest John Nolan of RR 4,
Seaforth, was also transferred to
Goderich Court, where he was
ordered to appear September 1 on a
number of charges arising from a
rash of break-ins to parked cars in
the Brussels area last March. Mr.
Nolan faces one count of theft over
$1,000, four counts of theft under
$1,000, and three counts of
possession of stolen property.
Robert Wayne Toal of RR 1,
Bluevale appeared before Judge
Hunter to plead guilty to a charge
of impaired driving, laid after he
was stopped by Ontario Provincial
Police in Turnberry Township last
April. He was fined $500, and his
driver’s licence was ordered sus
pended for three months.
Judge Hunter also ordered that
an outstanding warrant for the
arrest of Terry Powell be contin
ued, after the Auburn man failed to
appear in court for the third time
since last May. Mr. Powell faces
charges laid last April on one count
of public mischief and one count of
personating with intent to mislead
a police officer.
A warrant with discretion was
also issued for John Martin
Carmichael of RR 1, Belgrave,
after he failed to appear in court on
a charge of aggravated assault,
A
laid in Wingham on August 7.
•A trial date of December 23 was
set lor Robert Walker of Walton,
who will plead notguilty toacharge
of rendering property useless, laid
following an incident in the hamlet
on June 15.
