Five area people injured in current crashes Three area residents are home following a three-car crash August 22 on Highway 86 east of Listowel, which resulted in 10 people being sent to hospital and a total of $30,000 in damages, while a fourth person remains in stable condition in Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital. John Simpson, 76, of Brussels remains in hospital with a broken pelvis, several broken ribs and a fractured collarbone. He was transferred to the Kitchener- Waterloo hospital after being taken to Listowel Memorial Hospi tal following the crash in mid-after noon. Also taken to Listowel Hospital and later released were Mr. Simpson’s wife, Roberta, 71, and passengers in the Simpson car, William and Isabell Craig of RR 2, Blyth. Mrs. Craig said Monday that Mr. Simpson is “coming along fine,” while Mrs. Simpson was released from hospital Friday after being treated in intensive care for shock and massive bruising, while she herself was released August 24 following treatment for minor injuries. Mr. Craig was treated for a cracked rib at the Listowel Memorial emergency department following the accident, and releas ed the same day. “But we are all still pretty sore from it,’’ Mrs. Craig said. “We all got an awful throw-around. We were all wearing our seat-belts, but it’s the belts that cause all the bruising, especially in the back seats,’’ where she and Mrs. Simpson were sitting. The crash occurred when a 17-year-old Kitchener youth head ing west on Highway 86 pulled out to pass the Simpson car and a second vehicle, sideswiping the Simpson car and colliding head-on with a third car, driven by Nancy Frook of Walkerton. Mrs. Frook, who received seri ous head injuries, and her son, Derek, 10, were transferred to the intensive care unit at Kitchener- Waterloo Hospital, while Mrs. Frook’s huband, Kenneth, and two OPP crackdown on Labour Day The Labour Day holiday is the last long weekend of the summer. Commissioner Archie Ferguson. “Our Officers will attempt to save livesby stopping impaired and careless drivers on Ontario highways, but the motoring public must do its part by driving intelligently.” The O.P.P. will closely monitor traffic during the Labour Day weekend. Approximately 2,000 officers will be patrolling Ontario highways on the weekend, making maximum use of 400 radar units and500roadsidealcohol breath testers. A spokesman for the Listowel detachment of the Ontario Provin cial Police said that Christodoulos Christodoulou, who received only minor injuries in the accident, has been charged with careless driv ing. Mr. Christodoulou’s 1987 Camaro sustained $20,000 worth of damage, while damage to the Simpson car was estimated at $3,000 and to the Frook vehicle at $7,000. Mr. Simpson had to be extricated from his car with the aid of the Listowel Fire Department’s “Jaws of Life” following the crash. In a separate accident, Amy Workman, 16, of RR 2, Brussels, was slightly injured in a single vehicle accident which occurred on August 23 between Walton and Brussels. Wingham OPP said that Miss Workman was westbound on Concession 11-12 of Grey Town ship, when she braked to avoid hitting a dog, then lost control of her car as it skidded in loose gravel, crossed the road and rolled into the ditch.
