NWof Blyth Kathy's Korner Dropping a line BY KATHY BROMLEY Earlier, this summer, when we were experiencing record-break ing temperatures, we decided that we would take advantage of it and do something different for a change. A nice break from our daily routines. The boys had mentioned about going fishing numerous times before, but we kept putting it off and telling them “Maybe tomor row.” This time though, we were easily persuaded, so off we went with hooks, lines and sinkers. After we arrived at a local fishing pond, it took us no time at all to bait our lines and wait patiently for a curious fish to react accordingly. Unfortunately, the novelty was soon beginning to wear off, as I was getting restless, thinking of all I should have been accomplishing at home. It wouldn’t be honest in saying that I never got a bite - the mosquitoes are a different story altogether. Without as much as a nibble, I soon began to wonder if there was any connection between the turtles that were peeping their heads through the water, and the fish. I then began to assume that the turtles were informing the fish of the eager fishermen (and woman), that were awaiting their prey. The more Ithoughtof it, the more sense it made to me. I’d be further off dropping aline to our readers as opposed to the fish, who were showing no interest at all. Maybe there is some truth to having bad luck after having had fish and chips for dinner, prior to our departure! We all tried to re-locate our lines, hoping to find THE spot, that apparently didn’t exist. None of us couldevensaytoothers -- “You should have seen the one that got away”, for neither did we. I soon discovered that the “Ponds cold water’ ’ that I had stepped in, didn’t have the advantages that “Ponds Cold Cream”, normally used, has. The sky was soon giving obvious signs that a storm was quickly approaching. As the wind increas ed, ripples in the water moved rapidly. I found myself becoming slightly sea-sick, even though I was located on shore. Disappointed, we began packing our gear, to return home, empty-handed. Suddenly, something dawned on me and I reached an encourag ing conclusion - “If there is any truth to the theory that fish go around in schools, heck, they’re still on holidays! Better luck in the fall. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Doctors will tell you if you eat slowly, you’ll eat less. This is particularly true if you come from a large family. Blyth Scouts need help As people make back-to-school preparations the Blyth scout move ment, including Beavers and Cubs, is preparing for the new season. Activities and outings will be a part of the usual very active program with details about regi stration still to be decided. One problem which has come to light already is that again there is a shortageofleadersatall levels. This presents an opportunity for more members of the community to become involved in this worth while movement. Present leaders can fill interested persons in on details of requirements. The group committee which supports the leaders and boys also needs an infusion of new blood, Continued on page 20 The practice of DR. J.
