BONNIE LAMBLE MINISTER OFTHE WALTON-BLUEVAJLE PASTORAL CHARGE In “Bush Fire”, one of this season’s plays at the Blyth Festi val, there is an interesting scene which takes place in Clarence Ethel Compiled by Mrs. Margaret McMahon. Phone 887-9250 People busy with weddings Severalfamiliesattended the Smith-Farrish Buck and Doe in Listowel Saturday evening. Congratulations to newlyweds Cathy Smith and Dick Badley. They were married on Saturday in Ethel, followed by a reception in Atwood. John and Bette Veldhorst tra velled to Willowdale to attend the marriage of their daughter Geor- Caldwell’s store. In a very pom pous and self-righteousness man ner Caldwell denounces Ann Eas- by. She responds rather bitterly that his God is a small being who hides in secret places to spy on people and catch them sinning. It is not a very flattering image of God. But that scene is a sobering gina to Fred Witteveen on Satur day. Hans and Gerie DenDekker were also guests at the wedding. EXPORTREVENUES Ontario Hydro sold an estimated 524 million kilowatt-hours of elec tricity to the United States in June, earning Ontario consumers over $6 million in revenues. reminder that our own actions and behavior tell others about the kind of God we believe in. In the country to the south of us it seems that PTL Ministries are in pretty bad financial shape. So Jerry Falwell has proposed a magnificent fundraising scheme. He is looking for 1,000 people to donate $1,000 each. That will earn a million dollars. Those who donate the thousand dollars will be privileged to be present to watch Mr. Falwell, fully clothed, godown the main waterslide at the PTL theme park. I suspect it will not be difficult for Mr. Falwell to find 1,000 supporters. He will get his million, (maybe even by the time this article appears in print) and will go down the water slide. And predictably he will thank God for blessing him and PTL in this way. And what will that say about the nature of God? Is God the blesser of waterslides and the liberator of ailing religious theme parks? It is easy enough to be critical of Mr. Falwell. He is quite far removed from our lives. But do we ever do the same type of thing? What kind of a God do others see reflected in our own lives? Might they see a rather kindly God whom we worship on Sunday but who disappears for the rest of the week and who has no claims on how we live those other six days? Dowe reveal a God who is rather powerless, a being who does not really make a difference in our lives? How small is our God? How big? In Exodus 3 we read that when Moses encountered God in the burning bush, God promised that the people would know God by the mighty acts that God performed. Working through Moses, God did lead the people out of slavery in Egyptto a new life. It is God’s nature to bring freedom and justice into the lives of God’s people. CanweknowourGodinthe same way? Can we see God at work in South Africa to liberate Blacks from apartheid? Can we see God in Nicaragua bringing an end to war? Can we see God at work in Huron County bringing in a just economic system for farmers? Can we see God at work in our own lives, liberating us from all that enslaves us? God is known by mighty deeds. How big is God in your life?
