Licence fees benefit fisheries
Each year Ontario spends more
than $30 million on fisheries
programs. These dollars go toward
fish and habitat protection, fish
stocking, research, clean-up of
polluted fisheries habitat and
public education.
When the Hon. Vincent G.
Kerrio, the province’s Minister of
Natural Resources introduced the
resident angling licence this year,
he promised that revenues from
the sale of the $10 annual licence
would be used to benefit the
fisheries resource. Most anglers,
pleased that their money would be
directly benefitting their favourite
resource, supported the new plan.
Already, the Wingham District
of the Ministry of Natural Resourc
es (MNR) has completed some
fisheries projects made possible by
licence revenues. More than $120
thousand dollars has been allocat
ed tothe districtfor the 1987/88
budget year. Projects include:
habitat improvement (livestock
fencing, construction of instream
habitat devices, reforestation and
beaver dam removal) on coldwater
tributaries of the Bayfield, Mait
land and Nine Mile Rivers; rain
bow trout stocking in district
ponds; a study of the walleye
fishery in the Maitland River to
determine present use and future
potential, and various stream
surveys to record water tempera
tures, fish populations and use of
habitat.
District biologist Mike Malhiot
is enthusiastic about what may be
accomplished in this area with the
extra funds. “These projects are
making an immediate contribution
to increased sport fish produc
tion,’’ he said. “In addition,
important management questions
are being answered which will
enable us to implement new
ptojects as early as next year.
