Local 4-Hers take part in Silver Dollar competition Four North Huron 4-H members will make up part of the contingent of six county representatives who will travel to Erin this weekend to Farm take part in the prestigious Silver Dollar Competition held there annually. Representing Huron in the dairy competition are Anita Bos and Laura Hallahan, both of RR 3, Blyth, and Kyle Pewtress of RR 3, Wingham, all of the Hallrice 4-H Dairy Calf Club. Sandra Shelley of RR 2, Gorrie, a member of the Howick 4-H Beef Club, will representthecounty in the beef competition; as will Steve Beane of RR 1, Brucefield and Gwen Holland of Clinton, both members of the Kippfield 4-H Calf Club. The members will compete against representatives of other 4-H clubs from all across Ontario in the competition sponsored by United Breeders and designed as a challenge of intelligence, self­ expression, showmanship and knowledge. All competitors wrote a quiz and an essay during a day-long educa­ tional program at United Breeders headquarters near Guelph on July 30, and will compete with their calves in both showmanship and conformation classes at the Erin Fairgrounds on August 22 as the final two events of the four-part competition. There were 313 cattle and 642 pigs on offer. Choice steers sold from $90 to $93 with sales to $97.75 per hundredweight. Good steers were $85 to $89. One steer consigned by Darrell Dalton of RR 1, Walton, weighing 1330 lbs. sold for $97.75. A steer consigned by Murray Forbes of RR 2, Clinton weighing 1320 lbs. sold for $96 with his total offering of 15 steers averaging 1239 lbs. selling for an overall price of $91.55. It will celebrate Agri-Food Week. As part of the program, the Huron County Junior Farmers’ Association is sponsoring a Rural Leadership Awards Presentation. The awardswill be presented to people who have provided out­ standing leadership to their rural communities in Huron County during the past year or two. The committee will welcome nominations for these awards from organizations or individuals until Monday, September 21. A steer consigned by Field crop results in for Brussels Fair The results of the Brussels Fall Fair field crop competitions, stand­ ing crop division are now in, with Ken Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale, taking first prize with a score of 95 in the Mixed Grain class, and Jim BowmanofRR5, Brussels, placing first in the Barley class with a similar score. Allen Cardiff of RR 5, Brussels, placed second in the Mixed Grain class with a score of 94; Murray Johnston of RR 2, Blue vale, was third with a score of 93; and Keith Johnston, also of RR 2, Bluevale, was fourth with a score of 92. In the Barley class, Clare Veitch of RR 2, Brussels, was second with a score of 94; Jeff Cardiff of RR 5, Brussels, was third with a score of 93; andLyleMartinofEthelwas fourth with a score of 92. The standing crops were judged by Gordon Patterson of RR 2, Ripley. Each exhibitor must show half a bushel of grain at the Fall Fair September 22-23, to qualify for his prize money. Choice heifers sold from $89 to $92 with sales to $92.75. A heifer consigned by Ian Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale weighing 1010 lbs. sold for $92.75. Two heifers consigned by George Blake of RR 2, Brussels averaging 1085 lbs. sold for $92.50 with his total lot of 12 heifers averaging 1060 lbs. selling for an average price of $88.94. A heifer consigned by Harold Schmidt of RR 3, Hanover weighing 1120 lbs. sold for $92.50. Choice cows were $60 to $65. Good cows were $57 to $62. Canners and cutters were $52 to $57. Forty to501b. pigs traded toa high of $1.13 per lb.; 50 to 601b. pigs traded to a high of $1.11 per lb.; 60 to 70 lb. pigs traded to a high of $1.03 per lb.; over 701b. pigs traded to a high of .86 cents per lb.
