CHARLES CARPENTIER ETHEL AND BRUSSELS UNITED CHURCHES A certain professor of Theology, with a great ability to preach the Word of God, was invited to preach the anniversary sermon in a small, remote, but faithful congregation. After the service, there was the fellowship hour in the basement of the church, where most people congratulated the guest preacher on his sermon. The professor was introduced to the wife and the children of the minister who served that church. One of the children was a three year-old boy dressed in T-shirt and shorts which revealed not only his artificial legs, but the fact that he had no arms either. Later, the professor and his wife learned that the minister and his wife had heard about this handicapped child, unwanted by anyone because he had been born without arms and legs. They sought him out, made arrangements to take him home, adopted him and made him their own despite the fact that they knew life together would be difficult. However, the Risen Lord lived in them and their home continually andpowerful, giving love, faith and hope. As the professor was leaving to go, he told the congregation this: “I have seen a living sermon. You do not need anyone to preach your anniversary sermon.” and point ing at the wife of the minister and New Salvation Army officers in Wingham Wingham’s new Salvation Army lieutenant, his wife and family have taken up their duties, fresh from officer’s training college in Toronto. They replace the Captain and Mrs. Borden Linkletter, who retired in July. Lieut. Cal Barber and his wife Melony say they are looking forward to their first posting as Salvation Army officers, and are glad they have been sent to a small town. Both are natives of British Columbia. Husbands and wives are a team in the Salvation Army, Mr. Barber says, and must go through all stages of training together. Both the three year-old boy without legs and arms, he continued by saying: * ‘I wish I could preach as powerful as that!” Each one of us, is his or her own sermon. The life we live is the sermon the neighbours see. In a partners can perform the same duties, he adds, including wedd ings and funerals. The Barbers intend to continue many of the programs made popular by Capt. and Mrs. Link letter, but say they also hope to give more emphasis to youth work. Mr. Barber says they intend to meet with local Salvation Army members to discuss community needs before making any deci sions. The couple’s eldest son, Ben jamin, will start Grade One at Wingham Public School in Sep tember. Their only daughter, Leah, is four, and baby Peter is two. word, we as Christians do not simply give the gospel - we are the gospel. The gospel that commands you to care, to be concerned for every man, woman, or child who crosses your road. Unreal? Not if you ponder the word from the first Letter of John (4:11) ‘‘Beloved, if God so loved us (loved us so dearly that He gave His own Son for our sins), we also ought to love one another”. Unreal? Not if you realize that what God commands, He enpow- ers us to do. I have to say over and over again; “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” The test of the Christian society is not what it does for the wise, the noble, the mighty, or the things that matters most are not at the mercy of the things that matter least. ” In as much as you did it unto one of the least of these ....” A touch of love!
