Actress sick, director steps in Cranbrook We’ve all heard the saying ‘the show must go on' - but it took on a new meaning August 1 when one of the actors at the Blyth Festival fell ill and was unable to perform. In large theatre companies like Stratford and Shaw, there are understudies for all the major roles in any play, but at a smaller theatre company like the Blyth Festival this simply isn’t possible. Luckily for the Festival, this summer’s Associate Artistic Di rector, Terry Tweed, is also an accomplished actor. Terry had only four hours to prepare for the role of Ann Easby in“BushFire”-and there was lots to do. The costume had tobe altered slightly, and a pair of shoes had to be dyed the right colour. At 12:00, only two hours before curtain time, Terry was taken through the scenes and shown where she should be, and when. “It’s an actor’s nightmare to step out on stage unprepared” said Terry “but 1 simply didn’t have time to panic. The company all rallied round in an absolutely marvellous way, they were tre mendously supportive. Thank goodness it’s a small part; I was able to learn the lines for the first act before curtain time, and then learned the second act during the intermission!” Terry went on stage without a script at all - a remarkable feat considering the short preparation time. “I’m glad it was a performance of “Bush Fire” and not * ‘Girls In The Gang” -I can’t sing a note! And I would have had to learn all that choreo graphy too,” laughed Terry. In 1979, Seana McKenna made her professional debut at the Blyth Festival, with a bang - literally! During the opening night of “This Foreign Land” she made a wrong turn on stage during a blackout, fell several feetonto the floor of the auditorium and was rushed to hospital. There was no one to replace her, the play being an improvised collective without a script. One performance had to be cancelled - but Seana was back to work within four days, stitches in her head. During its regular meeting held on August 5, Grey Township Council accepted the tender of R. Farrish Construction Ltd. of Listo- wel for the loading and hauling of 12,000 cubic yards of pit run and 3,000cubicyardsof crushed gravel to sideroad 25 - 26, concession 8-9 (Krauter sideroad). The Farrish tender amounting to $14,400 was the lowest of five submitted. Construction is expect ed to begin in mid-August and will be completed by mid-September. Residents in the area are urged to use caution if they are using the road during reconstruction. Council also passed an emer gency plan by-law which outlines procedures and guidelines to be followed in the event of an emergency such as a natural disaster, etc. In other business, Council ap proved general accounts amount ing to $73,298.26, drain accounts amounting to $2,701.50 and road accounts amounting to $111,616.73.
