During presentation of the Huron County Board of Health report at the July session of county council, it was learned the board has decided to adjust the nutrition ist’s salary schedule to the same as that of the health educator. This results in the minimum increased for 1987 from $999 bi-weekly ($25,974 annually) to $1,040 bi weekly ($27,040) and the maxi mum increased from $1,208 ($31, 403) to $1,248 bi-weekly ($32,448). Reason for the upgrading, coun cil was told is that each of the two positions requires similar qualifi cations and should fall within the same salary grid. In addition, neighbouring coun ties are also advertising for nutritionists at a minimum salary of $29,500 and $29,600. Bayfield Reeve Dave Johnston expressed some concern at the board’s decision to upgrade the salary schedule now instead of during the county’s regular salary negotiations. Goderich Township Reeve Grant Stirling, the board chairman, agreed with Mr. Johnston’s com ments, but also pointed out that with other counties seeking nutri tionists, Huron would likely be unable to recruit anyone if the salary offered were not competi tive. Groundhog puts hole in township budget The front-right wheel of a tractor rented by the Howick Township roads department recently slipped into a large groundhog hole along a roadway, causing about $1,000 damage to the machine. Roads employee Ken Dettman was cutting grass with the tractor along a township road near Clifford June 19whenthewheelfellintothe large hole causing the tractor to stop suddenly. Mr. Dettman lurched forward hitting the steering wheel. He was not seriously injured. The tractor, rented from Mor an’s Farm Equipment, Mildmay, was pulling the township’s mower which was cutting weeds along township roads. The mower was not damaged. The accident will cost Howick Township the $500 deductible fee on the insurance policy covering the tractor. The Honourable Harvie Andre, Minister responsible for Canada Post, tabled the report in the House of Commons today. Canada Post’s loss from operations, which was in the $600 million range in 1981, now stands at a record low of $129 million. The Annual Report also shows that while the Corporation had planned to reduce its loss from operations from $210 million in 1985-86 to $132 million during the fiscal year ended March 31 of this year, it actually was lower by $3 million. The continued growth in mail volume, reflected in nearly all services and products, is the most relevant indicator of the success of Canada Post’s efforts to provide reliable service at a reasonable cost to the user. With record-setting accomplish ments in the past fiscal year, as revealed in its annual report, Canada Post is now moving closer to its target of reaching operating breakeven in 1988-89.
