On hand to accept the volume were library branch supervisor Susan Nichol, W.I. Branch Curator Marie McTaggart and District Curator Ruth Galbraith, and Brus sels councillor Betty Graber, as the representative of the village. Ashe had promised while he was in Brussels as the guest of honour at the village’s Homecoming cele bration in early July, John A. Ainlay of Evanston, Illinois, the great-grandson of William Ainlay, the founder of Brussels, mailed the book to The Citizen, which in turn handed it over to the safekeeping of both the library and the Institute. Thejoint presentation was made because Mr. Ainlay had asked that the book be made available to all the people of Brussels, and yet since it is to be kept perpetually in Brussels, it was felt that it should be under the stewardship of the Women’s Institute, which was a mandate to never remove any part of the Tweedsmuir History from the community Branch. Researched and compiled by Margaret McNickle Ainlay, John Ainlay’s wife, whodiedin 1983, the 400-page loose-leaf history con tains the names of more than 1,100 members of the Ainlay family, starting with John Ainlay, the father of Brussel’s founder, who was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1778, and came to Port Hope, Ontario, as an early pioneer in 1819, when his second child, William, was eight years old. The book has been painstakingly researched by Mrs. Ainlay, a genealogist, who devoted many years of her life to the work. It was first published in 1954, and revised in 1985, justtwoyears after her death. The format of the work permits the addition of the names and histories of further members of the clan, as the present day Ainlay descendants continue to marry and have children. Mrs. Ainlay has also devised a clever method of identifying each family member with the use of a code number, which is quickly learned and can be used to immediately determine the line of descent of any of the hundreds of persons named in the book. There are some 40 pages each of family members and of the identi fication codes, as well six pages of family locations, which list mem bers of the Ainlay clan in some 60 Ontario towns and cities from Dryden to Ottawa to Windsor, Continued on page 20 CL. o LU <t OO Q_ O Q_ d Tools g Equipment HOMEFARMCOHTRACTOR ’House ent out A so* for future reference. □ Sanders & Saws U Painting Equipment □ Post Hole Augers I I Auto Tools [ J Compaction Equipment □ Concrete and Masonry [Power Trowels Drills and Saws] □ Hoists and Jacks □ Ladders □ Lawn and Garden Equipment □ Handling and Moving Equipment □ Plaster Sprayers MANY OTHER ITEMSTOO NUMEROUSTO MENTION!!
